This is a profound book and has genuinely changed the way I teach. The sad part is how long ago this book was first published, and how little has changed to reflect the research in the school system.

I found this very interesting, as it does contradict the popular theories of rewards for good work, for good grades, etc. I realized that I had completely "bought in" to this point of view, and yet it didn't match how I am motivated!I think the bottom line is that "do this and you will get that" is an easy way to administer both rewards and punishments. It allows us to be "consistent" without requiring us to go deeper in understanding motivation and behavior of our children or employees. It allows us to believe that we have used effective "discipline" - again without having to engage in uncomfortable or difficult conversations.Bottom line: Kohn makes a great case against "do this and you will get that." But the alternative is not as simple, and that is probably why we fall back to "do this..." so readily.

Interesting information. Worth reading! If you're going to read this, though, make sure you read the follow-up books for advice about what to do instead of offering rewards and punishments.

Not only is Alfie Kohn's "Punished by Rewards" insightful, witty, and a change we should all consider making in our lives, it is precisely what society needs. The unsettling reality of our world, our society, our businesses, and schools is one which we can't just cover up with platitudes, batons, and shiny cars. It's precisely this discomfort we need to embrace. Every educator, every parent, every person who cares about happiness ought to read this book. I won't punish you and I definitely won't reward you if you do, the reward is in the reading.

This writer turned many of my assumptions upside-down about how to raise and educate children, and even how to encourage employees in the workplace. It is a very well-written and thought-provoking book!

This was a great book. Even though it gave evidence of the many mistakes that I've made in raising children and being a teacher I realize now how valuable it is to learn new methods. From what we are challenged with by this author, we can move forward to help our children rather than control them.

I first read this book shortly after it was published, and it was the trigger for me to change the direction of my career! I had been a consultant in the arena of compensation programs for 10 years and was frustrated with the results - people paid my firm big bucks to put together pay programs that did NOT get them what they wanted, and I was a part of that. Kohn's book immediately made sense to me and I left that firm shortly thereafter.I am no scientist, but I certainly trust "good" science and find it triggers my thinking about what we can do differently. We are closer today than we were when Kohn first published his book to finding alternative methods of paying people that allow real high performing organizations to exist. It will be difficult for many organizations to change, but those who do will excel in the marketplace, I believe. I am in for the ride, thanks to Alfie Kohn. This book is super cute and fun to color in. Only several of the pages were stuck together. Not too badly and have little evidence of being carefully torn apart from each other. I feel for the trouble of having to separate several of the pages only takes away 1 Star.

pictures are fun to color wish artist would have left a margin around pictures so that the words wouldn't have got cut off on some of the pages the words run past the edge of the page so some letters are 1/2 missing other than that fun book to color.

Images are okay I guess but the book itself is very cheaply put together.

This time it is encouraging readers to choose the track that best suits their interests and talents and forge ahead on life's journey. Dorfman suggests that though there will be "deep river valleys" and "high mountaintops," dark tunnels and uncharted territory, "I think I can" should be their clarion cry. The rhyming text often does not scan and forced rhymes such as "toured"/"aboard" are sprinkled throughout. Ong's illustrations feature pastel colors and a train that looks very much like its forebear. Children and adults of different ethnic groups and genders greet it on its route. While this is a pleasant book with a much-needed message of confidence and perseverance, that message can only be understood by older children and adults. To pair it with illustrations that have a definitely "young" look makes for an uncomfortable fit. And this text breaks no ground that has not already been mined in Dr. Seuss's Oh, the Places You'll Go! (Random, 1990). I actually gave this book to a high school graduate headed for college. The words are beautifully poetic and a great guide for life in general! I think everyone should have to read it not just the little ones. Beautiful illustrations as well. I love this book. It is a great book about the journey of life; with the ups and downs, including the bumps along the way. A great read for any age, but good to read to kids.

I originally bought this book for my oldest son, who was obsessed with trains when he was three. Although he liked the book's pictures and rhymes, he did not really understand the "story" and grew bored with it. Now that he is seven, I reread this to him and he really enjoyed it for its message. We stopped at the end of each page and discussed what he thought it meant, which was pretty much spot on for the most part. I saw online that a dad had all of his daughter's teachers sign a copy of "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" throughout the years and presented it to her at her graduation party. I am going to steal that idea with this book.I also read this at the end of the year to my 6th graders to kind of remind them of all they accomplished during their first year of middle school and to help them make smart choices in the future. As a language arts teacher, I also appreciate the metaphors and deeper level of thinking needed to engage in a meaningful conversation with my students.

Cute book. Actually has very valuable life lessons for anyone. Basically find YOUR place in the world. And keep trying until you figure that place out. I bought this for my adult son moving away from home to another state.

Such an adorable book! We read it online for free through We Give Books and loved it so much we immediate bought it for our daughter. It's one of her favorites and my husband and I both really love it too. It's nice to have an entertaining book that also teaches a lesson rather than just reading silly book after silly book. I have since bought this book 3 more times to give as birthday presents.
