Review

“A for Amazing, B for Buoyant, C for Charming, Bad Kitty takes us on a mad and manic joy ride through the alphabet. And if once is not enough, just watch out...D for Delightful!” ―Jules Feiffer “While the story is packed with colorful cartoon illustrations that introduce each object, it is Kitty who steals the show with her slyly drawn feline expressions. Intended for slightly older alphabet-book fans, this offering will attract readers with a taste for the ridiculous.” ―School Library Journal“A clever alphabet book for kids old enough to appreciate the way words work. The cat, with seemingly dozens of expressions, is the star, but other aspects of the amusingly silly illustrations have equal weight. There's so much going on here that kids will find lots to laugh about.” ―Booklist

"Bad Kitty" has an attitude problem. He's the original Grumpy Cat, Garfield at his snarkiest, the morality of an alley cat, part feral and part foolish. He acts awful just because. And he's funny, very funny. Read with authority and arrogance, pre-readers love him. He's everybody's rotten inner child come out of the closet to express his displeasure with the world. Pair the book with the "Bad Kitty" stuffed toy and it's the perfect gift.

My granddaughter loves this series and when this arrives for me to wrap I was surprised by the two "bites" taken out of the book (the bites are actually cut out and not black as shown in the picture). I no longer have the book to post my own picture... anyhow, I wrapped the book in white butcher paper and tied with a pretty bow. I then took an exacto knife and cut out the paper to match the "bit out" sections. Everyone at the party was in stitches, and my granddaughter anxious to see what was inside, as some critter had taken two bites out of her present. If you try this you will also need to wrap the book in a several layers of tissue paper before the butcher paper or the title will show through (and the tissue made the bites stand out). The "bites" don't show very well with patterned paper, but any solid should do.

Bad Kitty wasn't always a bad kitty, in fact she used to be a good kitty, until the day there was no kitty food in the house, only 'healthy' food. Bad Kitty then proceeds to destroy the house to show her displeasure. Once appropriate food is provided, Bad Kitty becomes good once more, although the reward she receives for her good behavior implies that her good behavior is not going to last. The following books contain the same sort of humor. Interestingly several of the follow-up titles are chapter book length. The author manages to insert ABC lists four times into Bad Kitty, which is quite an accomplishment in and of itself, but he also keeps the story moving forward to hold childrens' interest. I have shared this book with my kindergartners and they enjoyed it greatly. The colorful illustrations and design provide a nice complement to the wacky parts of the book. Recommended.

I found this at the library the other day and took it out for my kids - when we finally got around to reading it we had to keep it longer - the boys wanted to read it every night, take it to church, take it to school...Basically this is a quadruple alphabet book - it goes through alphabetical lists of the foods Kitty doesn't like, the myriad of ways in which she was bad, the foods her owner bought to placate her, and the many reparations Kitty then made for her badness. The illustrations are charming (I especially like the little fang kitty develops when she becomes bad), and the need to use the whole alphabet results in a broader vocabulary than is found in most children's books. It is wonderful for reading aloud (especially when the boys provide Kitty's sounds effects, e.g. "hack, hack!"), and the opportunities to point out someone else's outrageously bad behavior are very welcome to my pair of naughty small fry.I think this book could be enjoyed by kids of almost any age, as with "The Stinky Cheese Man," which I started to read to my eldest at age 2; kids can enjoy quite sophisticated humor given a little background information, and they really like being "in" on jokes and sharing knowing smiles. My 6-year-old is a beginning reader and can use it to sharpen his decoding skills while laughing out loud. The only reservation I have is that it does present as "yucky" several of the foods I try to feed my family...Still, I am adding it to my shopping cart today; as noted by other readers, it is a charming gift, and I really should pass one on to my brothers (for their kids, yeah, that's the ticket)...

My four year old little girl loved when I read this book to her last night. She laughed her head off, the whole time. The illustrations are cute, and I love the little bite mark details on the book. I'd recommend this book to anyone with a child.

Too funny, super cute and great for kids who are learning the alphabet. My son loves the bad cat collection and this one is his favorite, we always get this book for his friends as part of a birthday gift.

I purchased Bad Kitty for my (then) 7 year old son last year after reading positive reviews and getting a chuckle out of the excerpts. My son is a reluctant reader who is far more interested in sports and video games than reading, so finding books to capture his attention has always been a challenge. However, he is just absolutely in love with this series and this really gets him excited to read. While we have a bad kitty of our own, I'm quite sure any child could take joy in this book/series thanks to the humorous story lines and illustrations. I believe my son enjoys the book also in part to its comic book-like design.I highly recommend this book for 7-9 year old independent readers. It is humorous, vivid, educational and fun. My son literally screeches with laughter while reading these books and has even gifted a copy to his school library to share with other students. We have gone on to purchase all of the other books in the series, much to his delight, and enjoyed them all. We are still waiting for Santa to bring us Bad Kitty v Uncle Murray, but Happy Birthday Bad Kitty is our personal favorite so far.

Review

“Overall, Black Comics is an extremely well rounded and impressive work of scholarship. Though this book spans a wide breadth of critical perspectives on various Black comic creators, its critical inquiry is focused and sustained. ... Black Comics is as an ambitious, essential text for any comics scholar and should be regarded as a canonical example of American comics scholarship.” ―Francesca Lyn, ImageTexT

Black Comics is so well written and provides a wealth of information which so eloquently gives the reader an in depth perspective of the genesis of black comic writers and how underrepresented they are. It opens the door to inspire one to do further research to understand the plight of black comic writers and how they have evolved over time. It also brings to light various issues that comic writers have tried to deal with in their comic strips. Over the years I have never read comics thinking of social issues but now I am inspired to reread some older comic strips to try to really understand the social issues and not just look at black comics for their comedic value. The book also covers so many varying perspectives, that you will never just read a black comic book again, without thinking about, what is this writer trying to say or what is the social issue that this comic strip is dealing with or what is the writer trying to get a cross to the audience. This book has me looking at comics more seriously and for that, I am very grateful and inspired.Dr Sheena Howard has me excited about future books to come!

Information to lead to an even greater information trove out there. This book scratches the tip of the iceberg of our contribution and menial representation in the comic media genre world. I am going to enjoy this and will love to share its wealth of knowledge to my young clients.

This is an excellent collection of new essays on a much neglected topic of popular culture. It would be a great resource for public libraries, as well as research scholars. I highly recommend it.

This is a book from an academic's point of view. No off the street or assumption type of critique. The author knows her stuff with a sharp eye view of the topic. Wonderful read, but at the same time one book can't lend the only side to the story.

I got it a little late. But that was because I didn't know that the author would be at the Baltimore Comic Con to sign it.

good plot, with interesting twist

the book was shipped a day or so after I ordered it and it arrived fairly quickly. It's in good condition and I haven't found much, if any, wear and tear on it. There is a name on the inside cover which bothers me, but it's not that much of a problem. And it was fairly cheap compared to the other Animorph books I've found online.

According to my 9 year old daughter, not one of the best Animorph books but still very good. She loves the whole series!

Oh crap, it's time for David. I'm not sure if I read all 3 of them or did so in order, and it's been a long time anyway. At first, he seemed odd or something like that rather than outright bad. Is the evil sense in hindsight?I wonder how the Escafil defice went unfound for so long.As usual, seeing Erek is not good. I'm surprised that the Yeerks infested a world leader anyway. Such a major event happening near the Animorphs is more support of the assumption that the series is set in LA."You could put an eye out with that" great A Christmas Story reference about David's BB gun.Trained animals is a good cover story, or at least one we hadn't heard yet. Likewise, a cop telling off other cops was a good way aorudn the burglar alarm problem. At first I thought David's dad was too busy to take care of the kid properly. I suppose traveling all the time wouldn't help. We don't hear much about David's mom, only an afterthought in the "parents made Controllers" theme. Is that a deliberate point by Applegate or a gap in the writing?Okay, now that David found out, it would make sense to make him an Animorph and hide him. They wouldn't think to kill him, at least not right away.So Marco said his mom was born in another country. I hadn't assumed that based on Hispanic, but those two facts combined give a lot of options for headcanon of Marco's parents' relationship. I am a sucker for canon details.I hadn't expected such an awkward cliffhanger ending even for part of a trilogy.

Again, I come to the same problems like "the Departure". I don't have the whole series, so I can't start out with some summaries. I, again REALLY wish that anyone who has a full series, would give it to me by any chance if you decide to mail it to me, send me an e-mail. Anyway, let's go back to the summary. This story is lead by Marco, the some-what cool, loving to-be-in-center-of attention joker. Okay, they were enjoying their normal lives after their last mission, when Marco saw the morphing cube. The morphing cube Elfangor used to create the Animorphs. The morphing cube, the blue box, the Escafill device which had been thought to be destroyed with Elfangor is now found on hands off a new boy called David. Marco instantly realizes that David doesn't know what it is and what it can do. He also notices that the Animorphs should get the blue box as fast as possible, no matter what costs. The first plan was to just simply steal the Escafill device from the kid's room. The plan fitted into pieces as follows. 1. Fly inside the opened window with David hanging out on his pool 2. Get the thing. 3. Bail. However, they left out a few steps: the first was to check sure of the plan. Marco accidently hit the stick which was keeping the window from shutting, and he locked himself up. Second was that there was a cat in the room which made Rachel join after shattering the glass. Last of all, the kid had a B-B gun. He fired it at Marco who was really close of getting the device. As a result, the plan `A' failed. Next day, in school, Marco finds some horrible facts: David shot out images of the Escafill device on the internet, and Visser three already reserved it. Knowing that there isn't enough time left, Marco tried to stop this e-mail from being automatically sent to Visser three, and got in this really stupid mess with himself as a snake, Ax demorphing, and David's father witnessing with a gun. After that the things just got much worse. David and his dad terrified, Visser three himself, Marco- the snakeboy, and willing-to-revenge Ax. Later, the fight joined in with Cassie as wolf, Tiger Jake, and Exana in grizzly morph. Much later, the Animorphs realized that they need to bail and they did. Cassie, Jake, Rachel, and Ax hurled butts through the wall that Rachel knocked out. David was shoved out of the bathroom window by Rachel. And Marco had a close call of being captured. Later on, they decided to make David join them. Then David became the sixth Animorphs. The first mission after this Escafill device getting is to save the world's greatest leaders, Britain, France, Russia, Japan, Germany, and the United States. They knew they need to stop the Yeerks from infesting the world's greatest leaders and they were trying to when the book ended. I think this is a good book. I wish I had #21 to finish the story. BTW, this is #20.

This series started out like gangbusters, but this volume dragged. It felt like filler and many of the newer characters are annoying and not well filled out. I think the series should have expanded out into the new systems, not have a war in the old. This and volume five, with the exception of Amos (my favorite character) and the redemption of Clarisse, felt like too butter over too little bread. Will I read the next book? Maybe.

What I found cool about this installment is that Mr. Corey demonstrates continued growth in his writing where it pertains to dialogs and interactions between (generally) two people. There are many little exchanges that are so polished between verbal, nonverbal and nuanced "human condition" observations, that I was often left pausing and reflecting on how nicely done something was. I would go as far as saying many of these exchanges rise to level of artwork.However.The book itself, or perhaps I should say "story", not only never becomes something greater than it's parts, it actually manages to be much less. The many gems I described above didn't connect...I felt like a fair analogy would be going on a tour through an art gallery, lots of little interesting pieces that I quickly grew bored waiting for them to come together. There are a number of serial authors that I've become completely disenchanted with, Weber and Martin pop to mind. I wouldn't say this book left me feeling totally negative though, because it had the feel of the author trying on a new suit that's still in need of tailoring. The Storytelling got sublimated to the craftsmanship here, which is not only something that can be fixed next book, it has the potential to be one of the best. But only if Mr. Corey recognizes where the narrative and plotting just fall totally flat here. The forest got lost in the trees...I sure hope things get back on track.

When Frank Herbert wrote his massive Dune series, there were a couple of books that felt like they were holding operations until the NEXT big book. The action was sometimes perfunctory and the characters were not very well developed with the concepts remaining the glue that bound the series together. Likewise, the last book by George R.R. Martin that pushed the Game of Thrones series forward had long sections with characters that weren't well developed and, frankly, many that we didn't care about with the plot moving forward at a sluggish pace. I mention both of these because of the well developed universe of "The Expanse" series and these two are, largely, in the same category of a well developed universe with characters that we care about. With the latest book in "The Expanse" series "Babylon's Ashes" does propel the over all story arc for the series forward but also feels padded out with unnecessary subplots and secondary or even third string characters that had very little to the series except for minor subplots that, honestly, get in the way of our main characters and their goals.Like some others here I felt that the Free Navy (set up in the last book) is a villain that doesn't hold much promise particularly after the villains in the previous books and the introduction of the protomolecule. The mystery at the heart of who developed the molecule, what happened to them and why it was developed (and even more importantly, who they were afraid of) take a backseat here. While the development of the various human factions continues to be interesting, I'm less interested in them taking center stage and more interested in the protomolecule story line and where that was headed after the last novel where humans landed on a planet that was the staging ground for the creation of the aliens behind it.As others have noted, the authors have been great about telling their stories from multiple point-of-views and, often times, this adds to the suspense of the novels. Here, however, it has an effect of diminishing the suspense and many of these newer characters just don't hold my interest quite as well as those developed in the first three books of the series. The resolution of the story lines also isn't handled quite the way I had hoped (or was hinted at) in the book. That's not to suggest that this is a bad book. It just isn't the story I was interested in reading or, at least, the way I had hoped this one would develop. If you are committed to the series, you'll still enjoy the book.

I pre-ordered this book and read it as soon as I got it. I've delayed reviewing it because I wanted so badly to be able to write a good review. Since I've read this series from the beginning, it's fair to say this is the weakest and possibly the last in this series. After all, one of the 2 co-authors (Daniel Abraham) ended his Coin+Daggers series after 6 volumes. The book uses the same switching of point of view characters for each chapter as the previous 5 have done.. And of course one of the major characters in the series dies. There is a lot of politics and flipping of viewpoints, but they do tend to drag. The book sets itself up as a possible end to the series or as the possible set up for a continuation with a more galactic rather than just a solar system viewpoint. Time will tell. This was not a great addition to the series, in fact I would call it the weakest, but isn't that the way many final volumes are?
