Imperial Reckoning: The Untold Story of Britain's Gulag in Kenya, by Caroline Elkins

Review

“Caroline Elkins has written an important book that can change our understanding not just of Africa but of ourselves. Through exhaustive research in neglected colonial archives and intrepid reporting among long-forgotten Kikuyu elders in Kenya's Rift Valley, Elkins has documented not just the true scale of a huge and harrowing crime--Britain's ruthless suppression of the Mau Mau rebellion--but also the equally shocking concealment of that crime and the inversion of historical memory.” ―Bill Berkeley, author of The Graves Are Not Yet Full: Race, Tribe and Power in the Heart of Africa“On the basis of the most painstaking research, Caroline Elkins has starkly illuminated one of the darkest secrets of late British imperialism. She has shown how, even when they profess the most altruistic of intentions, empires can still be brutal in their response to dissent by subject peoples. We all need reminding of that today.” ―Niall Ferguson, Professor of History, Harvard University, and Senior Research Fellow, Jesus College, Oxford; author of Colossus: The Price of America's Empire and Empire: The Rise and Demise of the British World Order and the Lessons for Global Power“In the 1950s, Mau Mau provided the Western world with photographic evidence of what Africa and Africans 'were like': savage, bloodthirsty, and in need of British civilization. Imperial Reckoning shows us how these images neglected to show the brutality and savagery being committed against the Kenyan Kikuyu people detained by the British. Caroline Elkins fills out the images, tells the rest of the story, and corrects the record in this masterful book.” ―Henry Louis Gates, Jr., W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of the Humanities, Harvard University“Rarely does a book come along that transforms the world's understanding of a country and its past by bringing to light buried, horrifying truths and redrawing central contours of its image. With voluminous evidence, Caroline Elkins exposes the long suppressed crimes and brutalities that democratic Britain and British settlers willingly perpetrated upon hundreds of thousands of Africans--truths that will permit no one of good faith to continue to accept the mythologized account of Britain's colonial past as merely a 'civilizing mission.' If you want to read one book this year about the catastrophic consequences of racism, about the cruelty of those who dehumanize others, or about the crimes that ideologically besotted people--including from western democratic countries--can self-righteously commit, Imperial Reckoning is that book.” ―Daniel Jonah Goldhagen, author of Hitler's Willing Executioners: Ordinary Germans and the Holocaust and recipient of Germany's Democracy Prize“Given the number and nature of the atrocities that filled the 20th century, the degree of brutality and violence perpetrated by British settlers, police, army and their African loyalist supporters against the Kikuyu during the Mau Mau period should not be surprising. Nor, perhaps, the fact that the British government turned a blind eye, and later covered them up. What is surprising, however, is that it has taken so long to document the whole ghastly story-this is what makes Caroline Elkins's disturbing and horrifying account so important and memorable.” ―Caroline Moorehead, author of Human Cargo: A Journey Among Refugees and Gellhorn: A Twentieth-Century Life“Imperial Reckoning is an incredible piece of historical sleuthing. The author has reconstructed the story that British officialdom almost succeeding in suppressing. Her sources are the Mau Mau fighters and sympathizers whom the British detained in concentration camps during the 1950s. Her interviews with the survivors of this British 'gulag' are a labor of love and courage--impressive in their frankness and deep emotional content as well as properly balanced between men and women, colonial officials and Mau Mau detainees. Caroline Elkins tells a story that would never have made it into the historical record had she not persevered and collected information from the last generation of Mau Mau detainees alive to bear witness to what happened.” ―Robert Tignor, Rosengarten Professor of Modern and Contemporary History, Princeton University

This was one of the hardest book that I ever read, even though it was well written and interesting. I persisted since I was going to lead Healing from War and Genocide workshops in Nigeria and Kenya in May 2017 for Black Africans from about 17 different countries. The book provided me with very valuable information about the history of Kenya. The history was very disturbing to read. After all this happened after the Nazi genocide of the Jews of Europe and was committed by the British government with the knowledge and collusion of the leaders of the Conservative party. The stories of murder, rape, and torture, and forced evacuation of their homes and villages, were confirmed when I listened to the stories of about a dozen elders [men and women ages 80 to 106] while I was in Kenya.I do have one complaint about the book. Professor Elkins only uses the word "genocide" once to describe the British actions in Kenya. I wrote to her asking why, but did not receive an answer. From my perspective what Elkins describes fits the definition of genocide from the U.N.: killing members of the group; causing them serious bodily or mental harm; deliberately inflicting on them conditions calculated to bring about the group’s physical destruction; imposing measures to prevent births within the group; forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. (adapted from the United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 9, 1948).Read the book and you can decide.

I grew up in Kenya in Kikuyu and I always heard stories from my grandmother and great grandmother how horrible the British were, but I was young and had no idea how bad it was for our grandparents who survived the colonial period. I wept for my grandparents when I read this book, its unimaginable how cruel and sadistic the British colonial masters were. What's even more sad is that some of the same cruel colonialists still live in Kenya today since not all the settlers moved away after independence. The majority of settlers moved to Rhodesia and South Africa after independence but a large number of them remained and still occupy vast tracts of prime land in a free, independent and democratic Kenya to this date. There is no statute of limitations for murder and I hope that in the near future we will be able to track down any settler still living in Kenya who is guilty of murder and torture of Africans and make them pay for their past sins. I for one don't think they should be living a life of luxury in Kenya when they have the blood of so many on their hands. I intend to use my meager resources to find them, expose them and hope that one day they face justice.

The book will give a climpse into the workings of the british empire in kenya and the books does a great job of telling the truth about the terriable things the british were doing to the people of kenya. They were not so civil and yes definately not Christian in deed and actions . The birth of the modern day kenya was marked but alot of brutality from the british towards kenyans if you want an accurate look into colonial kenya from an impartial source i would recommend you start with this author.

The book, while highlighting a tragic chapter in the history of the Kenyan people as well as the horrific consequences of a paternalistic British colonialism, feels long. This book presents fact after fact connected to the brutal colonial policy of the British in Kenya. I can't think of one example of "benevolent colonialism" and how the British ruled in Kenya will make you sick. How the British could on one hand demonize the Nazi camps in WW2 yet turn around and brutally treat the Kenyan people is mind boggling. While the Mau Mau movement certainly acted in brutal ways at times, it's hard to know what really came first... Mau Mau brutality or British brutality. That said, the book feels a bit long. Imagine trying to hold your breath underwater for a long period of time. At some point you have to come up to breathe. When fact after fact of brutality is recollected it seems like it has no end. At many points I had to put the book down because it was just too much. The research done seems top notch but the point was made by chapter 3 or 4.I read this book in preparation for a trip to Kenya this summer. It does give me some modern day historical background that will help in relating to the Kenyan people.

This is an amazing book, that should be a recommended reading in every high school. The story of the mau-mau was something I did not know a lot about, and this book was an eye-opener. Caroline Elkins has done a great job in thoroughly researching what many wanted buried forever, and bringing out all the sadism and savagery in vivid detail. One of the best books I have read, ever.

This was an excellent book. It goes to show that what we were fed in the news media at the time was mostly rubbish. That none of these people were held to account is terrible. The British went there, kicked the local people off their land and took it over. The cruelty inflicted on the locals is appalling. I know British people who were there at the time. I will certainly look at them with a different attitude. And then there were the religious missionaries who said nothing. What would you expect.

After reading McDougall's book, walking in the outdoors is a whole new (and much richer) experience for me. And that includes the local city park as much as anywhere else. The book does a very good job of showing habitats, tracks and scat of different animals, as well as pictures of each animal (although I wouldn't have minded a few more pictures than what he has). He also includes stories from what he has observed himself and stories from others as well. This makes the book very readable - the story about the badgers by the side of the road on page 166 is especially hilarious. There is interesting information about different species on almost every page. There is also a great amount of information about observing and tracking wildlife, including tips like wearing hats and avoiding perfumed or color-brightening laundry soaps. This is really a very interesting book and I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to open their eyes and see more of the world around them. It has something for the casual observer and for the serious hunter.

This is the best tracking book I own. In fact, it's the best tracking resource I'm aware of (including web-based material). The author writes well, so the book is well organized and the information is presented clearly. The index is excellent -- much better than most books -- so it's easy to locate the info you need. The tracks are illustrated by drawings rather than photos, which I might have preferred, but the drawings are clear, and I suppose they illustrate key features better than most photos would. Best of all, this author really knows his stuff, and he writes about animals with passion and insight. As a result, this book is much more than a "track identification" manual. It provides serious -- but easy to read -- information about the animals whose tracks it covers. And the author has enriched the descriptions with interesting personal anecdotes about his own wildlife encounters. Finally, the author has included very helpful information about finding and observing animals in the wild. Highly recommended for people who enjoy wildlife observation.

Grandkids loved it

I was hoping for more pictures, but it is alright. This is more for older students.

If you go to the Natural Resources Commission office of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians in Petoskey, Michigan, you'll find The Complete Tracker on their reference bookshelf. If it's good enough for a tribal biologist to use as a reference, this book is certainly good enough for me.

This book tells you not only the tracks, signs, and description of animals but also their habits, mating habits, seasonal habits, and food excellent for hunters, trappers, farmers, ranchers and anyone else who either works in or enjoys the outdoors.

Seriously, Mr. Mc Dougall has put together an informative book about the art of tracking. I gave this book to my wildlife biologist husband and he gave it a thumb's up which is worthy of 5 stars. For a lay person such as myself, I have learned so much from the handy, transportable book. We spend alot of time outdoors, and I enjoy pulling out our various compact resource books to enhance the experience. This book is appropriate for all levels of tracker interest and certainly goes into more information than simply identifying scat. The book offers at least 80 drawings to assist in track identification of approximately 45 species of wildlife. You will gain knowledge as to age of scat (when was the animal here) terraine conditions, habit details, behavior, and potential for danger to humans. The guide is perfect for hiker, hunter and nature enthusiast. This is a great time of year (summer vacation) to promote more than campfire s'mores..bring this book along with you on your next outdoor adventure and spark true appreciation for what surrounds you. (and what you unknowingly trample on!)

Overall, it is somewhat an interesting read but, it contains false, misleading information through out the book. One example is that the author states on page 75 "Feral swine lack tusks (although some with mixed blood have them)". Domesticated and Feral hogs are both born with canine teeth (tusks). Farmers remove the canine teeth within a few days of birth so swine will not injure each other, their owners, or damage property. The crude drawings of scat (animal droppings) aren't very useful aids in identifying animals, color photos would be much more useful.

I have so many good things to say about this book, I don't know where to start... First, I loved the heroine, Ida Mae. Ida is a small town farm girl whose father introduced her to crop dusting at an early age. Ida loves to fly and when America enters World War 2, she gets tired of collecting silk stockings and cleaning houses and decides to join the WASP. Despite her amazing flying abilities, the WASP will turn her away simply because she is half black. Ida's desire to fly and aide her brother overseas in the only way she knows how overcomes her fears and she passes herself off as white so that she may do so. Her mother gets upset, her best friend gets upset, but Ida doesn't let them stop her and off she goes Sweetwater, Texas to fly.On top of getting a firm feel for life at Avenger Field during world war 2 and the flight training and procedures, readers also get a look at what it is like to be black in the 1940s. Ida is always having to worry about her hair curling too much or somebody figuring out her secret because back then, her secret could get her killed. On top of the racial tension is the fact that she is a woman to boot. I doubt anybody had it harder back then. Women in general had it rough, but being a black woman... most of us would not have had Ida's courage. Also in the story is how Ida deals with conflicting emotions regarding her family in New Orleans (she feels she is denying her own heritage and family, especially when her mom comes to visit and has to act like her maid) and her family in Sweetwater. How would her newfound white friends act if they knew the truth? My only complaint about this novel is we never found that out. There is also a situation with the loss of a friend. Ida has to deal with her grief as she watches a friend die and her conflicting emotions about the situation as she realizes it could happen to her.I absolutely loved the courageous flight Ida takes with Lily in a B-29. Great way to end this novel. Readers see how the WASP was literally used and discarded. I feel for all the women that were involved. Yet, this does not stop Ida Mae. Despite the fact that the Army betrays her and her female comrades in the end, Ida Mae still wants to fly, not as a white woman, nor a black woman, but as Ida Mae.Ms. Smith, I would like to see a sequel to this book. I would like to see Ida Mae go work for Walt and come clean about her heritage. I'd like to see her overcome the 1950s and keep on flying despite all odds. We need more books with strong female heroines, white, black, latina.... Thumbs up, Ms. Smith.

I bought it for my 9 year old granddaughter but wanted to read it first. I really enjoyed it - and as it is very truthful about what life was like for blacks not so many years ago, it gives me hope - considering the progress that has been made - that one day we will all be able to treat each other as human beings without regard to race or religion. I wish it would turn into a series :)

This book accurately captures the era of de facto segregation in the US military. It's a quick read suitable for children of about age 10 and older. This book should spark many discussions in classrooms. I hope that school districts will consider adding this to recommended literature.

A wonderfully empowering story about a woman of color. I assigned this as required reading for my sixth grade class. I hope this book becomes a classic on par with Island of the Blue Dolphins.

This book is a beautifully story about how a girl made her dreams come true even if that means giving up everything to act white.. What I did not like about the book was that the end of the book never told you what happen to the girl or if she decided to stay color or play white the rest of her life, it left you up in the air with wonders as though the author wanted you to give the story a end to suit you. This is why I give the book 4 stars instead of 5 other than that this book is perfect.

"Adult" version. If buying for middle school required reading...get the kids version!

The only bad thing about this book is that it is historical fiction and not autobiography. Great storytelling and captivating heroine!

This really was a fantastic book. The characters really jumped off the page for me, and I loved the glimpse into this little-discussed section of history.Really, my only complaint would be that it ended so soon - the writing pulled me along, and I had no idea it was finishing up so quickly!
