She has a way of immersing you in the scenes and situations without being too wordy. Her description and detail is so intense you can actually see the movie playing out in your mind. And INTENSE is the best way to describe this book. You think you see the next thing coming and then the author takes a sharp left. This book made my stomach lurch in angst, made my face ugly cry and had me laughing out loud many times over. From Down Home with the Neelys: Sweet and Spicy Slaw Pat: In Memphis, if you run a barbecue joint, you better have coleslaw on your menu and it better be good (ours is some of the very best). Indeed, you could spend a day in Memphis tasting slaw from rib joints all over town. And yet there are people who visit our fair city who are hesitant to try it, especially folks from the West Coast. This is a mystery to me. Coleslaw and pulled pork go together like lettuce and tomatoes on a burger, and salted peanuts in a bottle of pop (I bet some of you haven’t tried that, either). Bottom line: You come down Memphis way, you have to try our slaw. When we started Neely’s, Tony and I recognized the importance of slaw and knew we would have to come up with a killer recipe, one that would complement our sandwiches and our sauce. It had to be sweet yet spicy, because our barbecue sauce was truly mild. We also wanted it to be coarse and fresh (with a little onion flavor, and carrots for color). A big key for us was using two types of pepper, black and cayenne, which work together as well as Tony and I do. Then came some sugar, as sweet as my Gina. All of these ingredients have given us a coleslaw we are very proud of. For years in the restaurant this was my dish—no one made it for either location but me. I didn’t use measuring cups; everything was done by feel. As we grew, I knew I would eventually have to develop it into a standard recipe so others could make it. Now we have customers who come in and buy slaw by the bucket to take home and have with their catfish, spaghetti, or whatever they are cooking. This recipe will convert even those West Coast hard-liners who claim they “don’t eat slaw.” Gina: On our show, we like to tease that Pat is the sweet and I am the spicy (only my man knows for sure!). At Neely’s restaurants, the famous and addictive coleslaw happens to be both. We often double this recipe for parties, because leftovers are so delicious (and a food processor makes quick work of all that shredding). When making this slaw at home, it’s a good idea to use both red and green cabbage. It’ll give your slaw more color. Be sure to select the freshest, best-looking cabbage available for the prettiest, crispest, and crunchiest coleslaw you have ever tasted. Ingredients 1 small head green cabbage 1 small head red cabbage 4 carrots 1 medium yellow onion 1/2 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup prepared yellow mustard 2 teaspoons apple-cider vinegar 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper Kosher salt (Serves 6 to 8) Directions Cut the cabbages into quarters and remove the cores. Peel the carrots and onion, and slice them into pieces that will fit through the feed tube of a food processor. Fit the food processor with the large-holed grater attachment, and push the cabbage, carrots, and onion through the feed tube to grate. In a large bowl, toss the grated cabbage, carrots, and onions to combine. In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, mustard, vinegar, sugar, black pepper, and cayenne (whisk until the sugar is dissolved). Toss the dressing with the coleslaw, and season with salt and additional pepper to taste. Cover the slaw with plastic wrap, and chill for at least 2 hours before serving. I fell in love with Pat and Gina Neely when they were first seen on both "Road Tasted", & "Paula's Home Cooking". Just like the Deen family, the Neelys also share a true love for both family, and cooking great food! And it is reflected in the pages of this wonderfully-written cookbook, which also shares the name of their wonderful show on the Food Network, "Down Home with The Neelys". This treasured tome' of tantalizing recipes has my mouth watering! I had a copy of this book once before, now, I'm glad that I ordered this book to own once again! There are about four recipes in this book that I can't wait to prepare and share with my twin brother Ed! 1.)Barbecue Deviled eggs, 2.) The Neelys' Mac and Cheese, 3.) The Neelys' Barbecue Baked Beans, and last, but certainly not least...4.) The Neelys' Barbecue Spaghetti!!! (Yum! Yum!)

I love to cook and try new recipes. I first saw this cookbook at the Library and decided to check it out. I cooked a lot of recipes from the book adding my own twist from time to time but the base for many of the recipes are great and I received many compliments.I like how the book is set up and easy to understand. This cookbook is great to have in your collection especially if you love to cook and try new things.Enjoy!

Great cook book, too bad they broke up... I guess too much success too fast??? Anywho, I gave this as a gift to a friend that loved their show and southern cooking. In return she invited me over to dinner one night and put together a whole meal using recipes from this book. She's more of a beginning cook and all of it was delicious. Confidentially I think that was one of the best meals she'd ever made me. I gave her high complements and praise. I didn't know she used the book till after she told me later.

Always watch their show - love their cooking and their family stories. This book delivers both. Their "Momma Daisy's Banana Pudding" recipe is just like my Mom made it and it's always been one of my favorites. Can't go wrong having this book in your kitchen library. Southern cooking is "soul food" and this book has plenty of that with lots of pictures of food and family.

I had high expectations for this cookbook as I love their show. Maybe it is just a fluke but 3 of the 5 recipes we have tried have been on the bland side. Of the other 2 recipes, one was acceptable but not a favorite. I will say that the Neely rice recipe is awesome, and I guess that makes the cookbook worth the purchase.Addendum: The Cheesy Corkscrews recipe is pretty amazing. I forgot about that one. So we have found 2 really delicious recipes our of the 6 we have tried so far.

This is one of those Southern Cookbooks where there is literally something for everyone in it. I love the way how in the beginning of the book everything is catagorized and broken down into how they season, what seasonings they use and how to make their specialty seasonings.If you love to eat AND also appreciate cooking (and putting a whole meal together), The Neelys do not disappoint.The whole Neely family gets in on this cookbook. I felt like I was watching them on the Cooking Channel all over again. Plus Pat and Gina are absolutely adorable together...A class act...

I love bar b que! I was looking for some downhome bbq ideas and for a good sauce. So glad I got this book. The bbq sauce is so good, just smelling it simmering on the stove will get your mouth watering. Every recipe I have tried has been exceptional. The stories add another dimension to this yummy cookbook.

the only thing i didn't like about this book was the closeup picture of somebody's toes in bed for the late breakfast section. to me, that just doesn't belong in a cookbook. everything else is fine with the other pictures and recipes, so i probably won't throw it away , but i could do without that picture.

Such a wonderful introduction into Lutheran Christianity. Very easy to read and understand. A real pleasure to look at all the pictures and notes and explanations. I have enjoyed it immensely.

Beautiful book. I purchased one for myself and one for each of my three sons.

As a child, my mother will instruct in the ways as she had learnt from her Lutheran faith. This book gives me a better scriptural understanding on certain things that I wasn’t as sure about. Even though I identify as an Anglican/ Episcopalian in my adulthood, I know Martin Luther influence on the world will always be enduring.

Really well written in accurate but readable and approachable form.

Great book, easy to read and understand! Helped me to review my Luther's Small Catechism.

Sorry, Amazon, got my copy at church for weekly Bible Study group. My only regret is that the type is quite small for us older people. I prefer to read on my computer so I can enlarge the type.

I was super excited to receive this, way more excited than a 34-year-old should be about a coloring book. However, I was sorely let down. For me, personally, it didn’t have nearly enough of the hip-hop legends you would expect from a friggin Rap coloring book. No Dre, Snoop, NWA, Wu-Tang, Salt n Peppa, etc. I mean who includes Macklemore and with no Eminem- it’s MADNESS, I tell ya, simply MADNESS! And all the rappers I was excited to color- Biggie, Tupac, Jay-Z, and Kanye- ALL HAD MISSING FACES, you “draw them in”. No fun, whatsoever. Be sure to check out the list of names, so you know what you’re getting. I’d recommend the “Hip Hop coloring book” far superior, in my opinion.

My daughter seemed down and bored. She's a petite white girl in the suburbs of Seattle. I needed to give her some street cred. She needed some hip in her hop. This booked helped her through. It opened the lines of communication - not for us, but maybe someone?

THE DESCRIPTION DOESNT EVEN DO IT JUSTICE! I thought it would be like "meh" & cool but ITS EVEN BETTER! It has so many funny activities & some amazing artists. I think my only critique is that it doesn't have enough Female Hip-Hop artists but I guess that gives you an excuse for a Vol. 2!

I gave this as a gift to a friend who loves rap (old and new) and colors to relieve stress (he's 31 yrs old). He loved it and couldn't believe something like this even existed. He was flipping through the book as was blown away by who was in it.I would love to see a bigger one (it's a little short) or even a series.

This book has met my expectations. I'm glad that I ordered two. One for me and one for my unborn child.

I could NOT have gotten a better birthday gift for my friend. Every page is better than the one before. The "learn to draw Luda" page was a definite hit with the whole crowd at the party!

This coloring book is amazing. Good detail in the pictures, and a good variety of new school and old school artists to color. Although I was disappointed that the picture of Tech N9ne was a drawing activity instead of a straight-forward coloring page. I kind of wish that it was all coloring book and no activities. Still, awesome product though.

Its ok, pretty cool. But wish it was more than just the rappers faces, maybe like them on a car or street.. not much to color, i do like the word search, and another thing was that some of these rappers i never heard of like Riff Raff abd a couple of others, wish it had T.I. Lil Wayne. Andre 3000.

About the Author

From childhood, Elizabeth Wenk has hiked and climbed in the Sierra Nevada with her family. After she started college, she found excuses to spend every summer in the Sierra, with its beguiling landscape, abundant flowers, and near-perfect weather. During those summers, she worked as a research assistant for others and completed her own Ph.D. thesis research on the effects of rock type on alpine plant distribution and physiology. Used this and a couple of websites to prepare for a one-day hike up the Whitney trail. Success! The info and preparation tips were solid, paired with online (most current) information. The three warm-up hikes at altitude were good suggestions.ModernHiker.com has a great supplement for other information, including training hikes in months before your trek up to Whitney.Citizen beware: The government red tape and maddening multiple steps to get a day pass is a lesson in perseverance. Step one: Register for the lottery. Step two: accept your spot if you win. Step three: pay. Don't miss STEP FOUR: CONFIRM that you really, really want the pass you've already paid for two weeks-two days before you hike date. Step five: pick up your pass within two days of your hike. Miss any of these steps and you lose your spot.

Great book. Full of good information especially for someone planning to do the South Kaibab/Bright Angel Trail Rim to river and back hike. I did the hike for the first time October 15-17 2017 and I owe a lot of the success and enjoyment to Elizabeth Wenk. I highly recommend the book.

First, a disclaimer: the only other book I read to prepare for my summit of Whitney was "Mountain Lore from the Whitney Store", written by the owner of the Whitney Portal Store. Other than that, I spent countless hours on the the Whitney Zone forums, as well as the message boards maintained by the Whitney Portal Store. I found both of the online options to be far more informative than this guidebook...and the forums are free.Pros:-This book thoroughly outlines training & acclimation before your climb, and has a great section on determining your group dynamics.-The packing list is excellent.-The "Hints" in the route section are very helpful.-The charts to help determine timelines for dayhikes are good.-The list of possible campsites, complete with GPS coordinates, is very thorough.Cons:-There are far too many pages wasted on the botany and geology of the area (20 pages out of a 132-page book).-My biggest beef: There is not enough specific information regarding the trail in the "The Hike Itself" section; the author recommends photocopying this section and carrying it with you on the hike, but it's filled with too much extraneous information to waste the weight in my pack. For instance, in Section 4, regarding the Outpost Camp to Mirror Lake section of the trail, the author wastes 8 whole lines with information about which plants are bordering the trail and their water needs. I would have preferred to be informed that the trail through this section is filled with stone steps, and many scattered rocks, so extra care should be taken to prevent falls/twisted ankles.-Water sources should also be included in the "The Hike Itself" section, rather than the superficial coverage elsewhere in the book.-The black & white photos in this book are nearly useless - they need to be in color to really discern what's going on in the picture.-A brief reminder/coverage of hiker etiquette would be helpful - possibly in place of some of those pages & pages of botany & geology? The basics would be sufficient: yielding to uphill hikers, being quiet when passing through camping areas, and taking care to not shine your headlamp where it's not wanted.-As a woman, I would have appreciated a bit more detail about what I could expect for taking care of bathroom needs.I could have saved the money I spent on this book and been just as well-prepared for my Whitney hike.

Selected this book to prepare for this hike in my 70th year. It has provided the information regarding how to train for the hike, equipment needed, food and water requirement, weather conditions to consider, length of time to complete the Kaibab and the Bright Angel trails, the trail conditions and actual hiking experience. The geology and flora and fauna information is a bit too detailed, suggesting skip the 51 page introduction after reading about the actual hiking preparation and experience.

I am planning on hiking Mt. Whitney with some friends next year and wanted to get some solid information on what I am in for. If you are a hiker with medium experience and none at this high of an altitude, you may have similar concerns as I did. I had questions about whether this would be a reasonable hike for me, what to take, what to do about water, what to do about going to the bathroom, where to camp, how to time the hike, how to obtain the permit to do the hike, etc. This book provided well-reasoned, experience-tested answers to all these questions and more. Now, assuming we get our permits, I'll see if the advice holds true! I'll update this review after the trip.

This book was especially helpful because we were doing this exact hike (down South Kaobib (sp?) and up Bright Angel Trail) but the book would be useful regardless. Great sections on what to pack, how to think about and prepare for a strenuous hike, what to expect, ideas on how to train and pace yourself and then good info about the canyon itself. There is a lot about geology as the author seems particularly interested in that, history of the canyon, etc. We mostly used it for logistics and planning and it was terrific for that.

Got this on my way to the grand cayon as a reference. If you are planning on doing any very long or overnight hikes id recommend get this book atleast a couple momths im advance to give you the info to make yoir trip everything you want it to be. Good info for the beginner or advanced hiker. With many little tidbits on important things you coild easily overlook.I finished the book a while adter my visit but ot is helping me plan my next trip which I hope to include atleast 3 overnights below the rim.
