I am using this book in one of my college classes. The book isn't the best out there, but was a good compromise. The author is simple, straight forward, and easy to read. A programming book that doesn't read like stereo instructions. Sometimes, he does leave out little steps that make you want to hit your head on the computer later. Also, I have found a couple of mistakes. Not sure if that is because I have the kindle version or if its apart of the original publication.Even though there are little mistakes and such, the book is soooo much nicer than many of my other programming books. We only take three programming classes for our degree and are just thrown into it. So this is good for someone similar: who knows just enough programming to get you into trouble. (lol)

Google Maps Applications with PHP and Ajax, provides a very easy to understand clear path for getting started with Google Maps. As a PHP developer, (not as much javascript), the book shows an intelligent and useful approach to working with client side scripting and document objects. Great samples throughout the book. I highly recommend this for anyone getting started with Google Maps, regardless of PHP or Ajax...this book is still very useful for any developer.

I haven't had a lot of luck with Apress. And this book is no exception. .kmz format inclusion use in chapter 1 not adequately described.The recommended [...] site is a unusable, can't find Phoenix, Arizona and doesn't explain how to format your lat longs. Code samples are in tar, instead of zip format. Not a show stopper, but another annoyance. And lets face it, there are enough annoyances just learining a new API.

This book has a lot of very practical examples. With this book and the API docs you can make just about anything you like. Good, clear code and comments. Get this book if you want to make Google Maps.

I pay for this book, the last week, but in any place i look the version of the google api, this book is too old, please update the book, o stop selling.

Page 2 of Chapter 1 shows an XML and XHTML strict - but the code is so straight forward - that you are not in the least intimidated with the strict XHTML. To find something students can relate to that gives a solid example of two abstract things - is great. There is nothing to be intimidated with, the explanations are clear and the web site - give corrections. Each chapter offers a lot fore each level user.Chapter 1 is fun for a wide range of web skills: Web Development, Digital Photographers, Digital Imaging, and more advanced.Chapter 2 - gives the JavaScript, XHTML developer's lots of detail on what is going on in the script. Each exercise builds on the previous one, until by the end of the chapter you have a robust program, you can use immediately.Chapter 3 - adds user input, it begins the discussion of adding to a Database & Ajax. You have a dialog wit the authors of why they did what they did - it's insight to working with a database. The chapters keep getting richer and draw you in. You hate to put it down!Appendix B has a generous 28 page summary of the important API commands, making learning Google Maps API easier.I am adding this to my Reference Book listand it will defiantly be a required reading for Advanced PHP classes.Jil MacMenamin[...]

I am a fairly inexperienced, self taught programmer. I bought the book partly due to the fact that it had "beginning" in the title.The code that is used in the book is not laid out very well. There are parts of the code that they don't explain (such as what apikey.php is) until you go and find out on their website what it means.They are also very inconsistent. Sometimes they used apikey.php and sometimes they didn't. Going through the examples they use the same file names for different examples so you don't know if you are suppose to use the old files from the previous examples or not.Even after I got all of the files that I needed for the tile overlay example it failed on me. This is after spending 3 hours reconstructing the MySQL table (which I didn't care about) because that information wasn't provided with the tile overlay example. After doing all of that work and using their unmodified code (except to change my database logins and api key) the code didn't work. And it failed BEFORE it even got to the MySQL database which means all that work I spent was for naught.The authors suggest that you can email them (and I did a couple times) and they will get back to you. Its been several months and I still haven't heard back from any of them. The questions were about problems using their unmodified code.This book may be good if you have some experience with coding. But on the other hand if that is the case there really isn't any need to buy the book.

This book is very well written. Very concise, clear and focused in the real world problems and solutions. Following the advices and codes of the book, you will can afford most of your google maps projects knowing exactly what to do, and how to do it. I specially find very interesting the chapter dedicated to how to code a map with multitude of markers. Very clarifying.Must have-read book if you are working in a Google Maps project.

a classically simple approach to atomic theorythrough the model of perfect gases. the drawings,actually cartoons, are original and illuminating.using atomic spectral analysis, the author intro-duces basic ideas of quantum electrodynamics.the student who reads and understands this simpleintroduction is now ready for the excellent historicaltext, "inward bound", by abraham pais.

This text is for the layperson (like myself, without a math or science course in 35 years)a bit more of a challenge than books by Greene or Gribbin on quantum mechanics or theoretical physics. If you allow yourself to glide by the equations, beneath them is a very objective and clear explanation of the fundamental concepts of quantum physics.

Max Born was the first to give the probability interpretation to the Schrodinger model, and this book is, besides being still in many ways an excellent introduction to elementary chemistry and physics, an important historical contribution to scientific pedagogy. It is imaginative and stimulating. I have the first Dover edition (1951), an over-sized paperback, with the "flip films" printed along the left and right margins. I am not sure if they are in other editions -- or of their quality; I would imagine they would be well depicted in all others. Like Gamow's "1,2 3, ... Infinity" and Eddington's "Space, Time and Gravitation" it deserves to be preserved although there have been advances in the sciences and newer methods of presentation have been developed since their publication. Born's book is entirely suitable summer reading for an interested high-school student before taking chemistry, but he or she should also glance through the textbook. In many ways Restless Universe will be much better reading than the modern textbook, but one had better know what the modern periodic table looks like also and be aware of the gaps. It was written in an era when students and the general public were not assumed to be innumerate dim-wits: The math will not be, however, too difficult for the reasonably educated person. For the person who is interested in the scientific history, it is interesting to see how some scientific data has changed since this edition.

Max Born was one of the prime movers in the development of quantum mechanics. He also produced several books for a general audience, and this is one of them. It was written in 1936, with a postscript chapter that tries to bring things a bit more up to date (at least to 1951 when this Dover edition was first published). One of the most interesting features of this book is the inclusion of seven "flip books", which are included in the margins of most pages. By flipping the pages one can see the motion of atoms, operation of a Hertzian oscillator, the scattering of a particles, the motion of electrons in H atoms, and the rotation of orbital planes.The book begins with the kinetic theory of gases and uses this to develop the general concepts of Newtonian mechanics and thermodynamics. This treatment is devoid of mathematics and is a great introduction to physics, written for a general audiences, but with insights that physicists may also find interesting. It is suitable for high school students and non-science major college students. The book then proceeds to two chapters that cover electrons and ions, and waves and particles. These chapters cover the fundamentals of relativity theory and quantum mechanics. Again the treatment here is quite general and non-mathematical. These sections are still quite relevant even after 70 years, but after these chapters the book starts to show its age.The final two chapters of the book deal with the structure of the atom and nuclear physics (circa 1936). The structure of the atom chapter gives a very nice overview of the development of the Bohr atom, with the modifications made by Sommerfeld, Pauli and Dirac. It covers the development of quantum numbers, electron orbits, and how this explains the observed atomic spectra. This chapter is probably of more interest to physicists than for a general audience, but it is explained well and is not too complex, so someone without a physics background should not become completely lost. The final chapter covers nuclear physics, primarily isotopes. Nuclear physics has advanced so much since 1951 that this chapter is mostly only of historical interest. After the material covered in the original 1936 book there is a brief postscript chapter trying to bring things up to 1951. This chapter is very general, and while it briefly mentions some advances in quantum electro dynamics, these references are very general and are mostly of historical interest. The rest of this postscript is really just historical, dealing with topics such as the impact of science on WWII (mostly the atomic bomb, but since the author was not actually involved with this work it is extremely general and very superficial).This is a great book for a high school student interested in science. Those interested in the history of science and old science books will also like this book as it is a classic, written by a master.

A classic Dover edition that uses page margins to create flip books of physical phenomena like kinetic theory of gases.After another classic (The Mechanical Universe) that used animations (by James Blinn of NASA), physics is much better understood. But Born did this back in 1936. Good show, Max!

This is a refreshing book - I don't think it will stand without update for 10 years, but as of now it is chock full of useful and relevant practical advice for improving your debugging. There is decent coverage of strategy but I prefer the "Debugging Rules" book for that - this book excels in presenting a strategy and then showing you very specifically how it might be implemented in a particular situation. There is a sample chapter available online (which exceeds the utility of the amazon preview). This is an excellent book to read and then pass around at the office - everyone will benefit.
