One of the world’s foremost motorcycle historians, Ian Falloon is the author of more than forty books on motorcycles. I'll admit that I have a bookshelf full of cookbooks and a decent section committed to alcoholic creations... The problem is that while I can easily use 90%+ of the recipes in the cookbooks, I've almost never found more than 1 or 2 cocktail recipes per book that I can make without a pilgrimage to the fancy hipster liquor store. That's why I can honestly say, THANK ALL THAT IS HOLY for this book. With a single bottle of booze and a few items from you pantry or the grocery store (where you're headed anyway for dinner ingredients), you can make a cocktail worthy of, well, a bar. Please don't take this as a knock on mixology or awesome bartenders - they're great! But just like I don't have a pizza oven, a salamander broiler, or a sous vide set up (fine...I do have a sous vide set up), I often find that I don't have some of the rare bitters and liqueurs called for in most of my cocktail books. OH! And as an added bonus, there are a bunch of large batch cocktails in this book that are fantastic for when you don't want to be stuck at the bar for your entire party. I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK. Buy it. You won't regret it.

I've been slowly making my way through The One-Bottle Cocktail since it came out in March. The reason I love this book is that it taught me a new way of looking at them: Focus on the non-alcoholic ingredients primarily for the flavor (fresh juices, spices, herbs, fruit, and teas) instead of liquors. I’ve learned a ton from this book about which flavors work together, how certain flavors interact with certain liquors, and how much the flavor of certain herbs and fruits can vary from plant to plant and piece to piece.The other thing I love about this book is that it has bonus drinks at the end of each section, noting where you can substitute the same liquor from that section into other drinks in the book.We're looking forward to drinking our way through the rest of this book. It will really be great this spring and summer when we will have easy access to edible flowers and herbs. If you haven't picked up a copy yet, you need to.

I don't make a ton of cocktails at home. I have a few that I rotate through (Manhattan, Negroni, Division Bell), but that's about it. The main reason is that keeping a bar stocked with all the vermouths, tinctures, and liqueurs necessary to make a much wider array of drinks is unrealistic--my collection of spirits takes up enough space as it is.This book opens up a whole world of new flavors for me to experience--it takes the half-drunk bottles of spirits I already keep around and ups their utility big time, using ingredients I either already have in my fridge or that I can acquire at the grocery store around the corner. The photos are beautiful, the writing is clear and approachable, and there's a nice array of drinks that run the gamut from very simple and quick to make, to more complex and impressive options that are still easily achievable for everyone.This is a gem!

I’ve been following Maggie’s writing for years, dating back to her days at Serious Eats. I tried one of her drinks last December at my cocktail party based on a promo for the book. It was a huge hit. And I continue to be impressed with this gorgeous book. It has a great mix of single drinks and recipes for parties (can’t wait to try out Mr Tingles Punch). Some have just 3 ingredients, require a fair bit of prep and novel ingredients (I’m not yet ready for the egg white). We don’t drink liquors that often but it’s a great book to have on hand to impress. Also, makes a good gift for those who like to entertain (gave a copy to my Aunt for her birthday)

This book will push you out of your comfort zone, and that's a good thing. If you're looking for recipes for familiar or run of the mill cocktails, this is not the book for you. However if you're looking to try something new, experiment with unfamiliar ingredients, and surprise yourself with unexpected flavors, then buckle up - you're in for quite a ride! As promised, the author delivers recipes that require just one liquor - choose from vodka, gin, bourbon, etc (drinks are separated into chapters by liquor). Planning is required because many of the ingredients are items you may not keep stocked in your pantry (although I'm beginning to wonder why I don't). These drinks require fresh ingredients including fruit, herbs, and juices, so flip through the pages and develop a shopping list before your next grocery or market run. With a variety of single drink and pitcher recipes, the author provides options for a snowy night in or a summer backyard party. A variety of sweet and savory ideas will keep you guessing, experimenting, and thinking about your own twists on the original recipes.

A phenomenal book of recipes; I've had it for 12 hours and have already made large batches of two cocktails in here. All the recipes are not only simple (and don't require a garden full of unobtainable fruits or an expensive cabinet of liquors), but they are thoughtfully balanced, creative, and just goddam delicious. Lots of vegetal cocktails (e.g., that feature fennel, arugula, etc.) which are my absolute favorite.

This is such a fun cocktail book. I love hosting cocktail parties, but always end up having to search all over town for some random obscure ingredient. Have you ever tried to find rhubarb bitters? Not an easy task, I can tell you (although they sure are tasty). I once spent an insane amount of money on some high-end blackberry liqueur (the only brand I could find). Used a small amount in a cocktail, and by the time I thought to use the liqueur again it tasted like raisins. What a waste. With this excellent book, I can focus my energies on what is most fun--making fresh and interesting cocktails. I can't wait to try a Breakfast of Champions (bourbon + honey nut cheerios-infused milk!) or the gorgeous-looking Passport to Chile (finally, a use for that bottle of pisco I had all but given up on!). This book contains endless inspiration for future cocktail parties--and a ton of creative ways to make tasty cocktails from a simple bottle of booze.

Great and beautiful maps. They are beautiful and Forester's tongue-in-cheek comments are fun to read. I am glad I purchased the hardcover edition where they are printed nicely on good paper. They would be disappointing in a trade paperback.The personal reflections that make up the second half of the book - meh. Forester's recollection on how the Hornblower novels came about may be an entertaining read, but the beautiful 30 maps that accompany Hornblower's career from lowly Midshipman to his final adventures in the West Indies made me dust off my old Penguin paperbacks and spend the weekend reading.

The maps are a great resource, although you could (and I have) print them out from Google maps and figure out where most of the stuff is (a lot of work, though). The really invaluable part is Forester's insights into how he created the characters and came up with the story ideas. Great stuff. I do think you would have to be pretty familiar with the series to really appreciate it, though.

A real Gem. As an aide to understanding the exploits and personality of this "legendary" figure, the book is invaluable. I followed Hornblower, my son follows Hornblower and the book is under wraps for delivery to him for Christmas. Can't wait to see his eyes ..... He is now 51.

This is an indispensable reference to the Hornblower books. I kept Google Maps open and displayed the appropriate maps and the Companion made sure I had the right locations. Reading on the Kindle (iPad) made it easy to keep the maps handy. This book served primarily to give geographic shape to the narrative.I also found Forester's confessions about writing informative.

My expectations were met and exceeded, especitally the section on Forester's writing methods. I liked the way he tied the differents sections of the stories with the locations and the maps describing the areas and the historical background of each one. Anyone interested in the Hornblower stories will find added enjoyment in this book.

A terrific text when studying for inpatient OB RNC. The practice questions at the back of the book were particularly useful. This book was a more helpful study guide for me personally than the Intrapartum Modules book, in part because the practice questions were better. This book also covers more material, including newborns. I can see myself referring to this book often in my career.

I have been a nurse in several different areas, I have now found my way to L&D which is what I have always wanted to do. My boss recommended this book, and I am glad she did. It is very comprehensive, up to date on the latest practices, and explains very much the "why?" we do certain things the way we do in L&D units. Pretty much explains you what the standard of care is across the board. Some of my experienced nurses also found it very useful as a refresher and ended up buying it as well. Worth the investment.

For Labor and Delivery nurses preparing for Certification Exams (RNC-OB or RNC-EFM) this is an excellent resource. Goes into the pathophysiology of all things Perinatal nursing. Review questions were helpful, just not very many of them. This really goes into the "meat" of Obstetrics and will provide an excellent foundation for any nurse looking to go into Women's Health.

Used to study for OB-RNC certification. Book is written in a professional journal format. No nice pics to catch your attention of keep you enticed. Must have the mind set to study to get through this book.

I purchased this text to support studies for an OB certification exam. I was pleased to see practice quizzes at the end of each chapter. Unfortunately, I have found several answer errors in the practice quizzes and wish there was a way to follow-up for clarification. While these may simply be typo errors, I wonder who proofed the quizzes.

One of the best biographies of Washington in a compact one-volume book. Chernow is a fine author, with an extensive vocabulary and an informed background on his subject, including what previous biographers have said. He does have an irritating habit of using "one" as a subject, such as "One wonders what Washington would have thought had he known." The "one," of course, is Chernow himself, but he wants to avoid the self-conscious "I wonder." Instead, he could have said something like, "It is interesting to speculate what Washington would have thought," or something similar. Otherwise, I found it a fascinating read, very authoritative even though the occasional slip back and forward in the timeline caused me to check dates to make sure I understood. He might be discussing something in 1789, for instance, and then mention something that happened in 1787 and then go back to 1789. This is handled pretty well, and is unavoidable in some cases, and if you check, you can see that he is conscientious about it, but it does require the reader to pay attention, not a bad thing, but something many forget to take some responsibility for.

This book is long with a small script, you have to concentrate and once you focus, the story sucks you in like water down a drain. Washington's mother was selfish, he forged his way in life in spite of her. He was a land surveyor as a teenager and amassed 1200 acres by the time he was 18. He surveyed the area in Virginia where the natural bridge is, and his initials are carved in the stone. Ron Chernow did an outstanding job researching this fine book and has a nice writing style. George Washington's friends and foes alike felt there was divine intervention as to how he stayed alive in battle. This man had a spine and showed remarkable courage under literal enemy fire. He was a visionary understanding his place in history and lived by both rectitude and probity. He turned down the title of king when debate occurred as what to call the ruler of the country. Fascinating vignette was his view of slavery which he disliked. He felt it was a losing proposition one third of the slaves being too old or two young to work, one third spending their time trying to do as little work as possible and only one third actually worked. He tested his slaves kindly and even provided for his favorite slave, Billy, in his will. A wonderful book that makes nearly every other president look like hollow shells in comparison.

It feels inappropriate to give a work of such magnitude and research 2 stars. “Washington” is chalked full of accolades and five star reviews. Chernow is academic to the highest degree. His knowledge is expansive and his writing is paired with an incredible vocabulary which is exceedingly fluid and enjoyable to read.The primary problem I had with this work was that Chernow more often assumes the role of a psychologist then that of a historian. While it is expected that some "analysis of the psyche" be done by a biographer, Chernow puts too great an effort to get inside the head of Washington. Page after page is spent trying to discern Washington’s ambitions, his love life, his temper, his feelings, his emotions—the real Washington. Ironically this seems to only further obscure this figure to me.Too often Chernow assumes what should be left to the reader to conclude. Sentences begin with statements as: “Surely this is due to Washington’s inner…”or “Washington’s insecurities were no doubt influenced by…” This is not history; it is the narrator’s voice getting to loud. I would rather Chernow had simplified his biography by stating the facts as they happened. Upon painting the picture, he could have presented--with far less dogmatism--various opinions (including his own) as to the inner mysteries of Washington.Chernow did his homework on this book and much of his recounting is enlightening. He is a talented author and a great historian, and I learned a lot throughout this biography. It is a shame he spent so much of it speculating who Washington REALLY was, instead of simply stating who Washington was—and leaving the finer mysteries for the reader to decide.

I like this book. Bauer's selections of classic books are classics in her opinion. Another knowledgable person would have an entirely different list. I appreciate the book for what it is----- Susan Bauer's opinions. She has multiple degrees and she knows more than I know----but I am intelligent and I have read for many years. The first thing I did was go through her list and mark the books I had already read. Then I began reading chapter one, which was Bauer's excellent instructions for reading any book. However, it was basic for a real reader. Most of her suggestions are things I do without thinking. Next, I went through the book list, read her summaries and marked the books that interested me. Sometimes her summaries tell too much. I have just finished " Uncle Tom's Cabin" and "Pilgrims Progress" . These books have brought me great joy. As I read both books they were familiar, so perhaps I had already read them in school. Anyway, reading the two books as an adult was an entirely different experience. SO, Bauer's book, as an enticement has done its job. Just as importantly, I have found that some of her suggested reading absolutely does not interest me. "Well Educated Mind" has saved me an immense amount of time---I definitely will choose NOT to read some of the suggested books. As a comparison I am going to look into book suggestions by other qualified people Susan Bauer's book has stimulated me and set me on a trail of reading that was always in the back of my mind.

I've been out of school for many years now. Many times I have wanted to go back to college and take classes, but I don't think it would be a good decision at this stage in my life. I love this book because it challenges one to educate themselves. It not only inspires, but also gives one the how-to. I can't recommend it enough!

If you believe that "some books are to be tasted, others swallowed, and some to be chewed and digested", then I suspect you will enjoy this book. I found it extremely helpful in laying out a well thought out process for the 'chewing and digestion' of some of the more difficult texts.

...until now. I have found this a very helpful tool to fill in some of the gaps in my education. Well written, good suggested reading lists for each of the genres covered. I have not completed this book totally, but have done enough work to know that it is well worth the effort and time.

This book is a nice guide for broadening and deepening your reading variety. I used it to push myself into reading items I would have ignored. I like the authors suggestions for keeping notes on your reading. It has helped me not only understand more deeply but allowed me to review parts of the reading I had forgotten by the time I'd finishted the work. I recommend this book for anyone looking to expand and grow.

The Well-Educated Mind does a wonderful job of explaining how to go about reading with a purpose in an approachable and non-pretentious way. And by books, I mean not just any books, but some of The Great Books (key impressive music); which to some like myself, may be slightly intimidating if you are a decade (or two) out of university. (And never got around to reading any of these books while in said university). The author's approach is very straight forward, but her writing is anything but dry. She gives practical ways to break the books (which are addressed by genre in different chapters) into digestible chunks which make tackling these works perhaps more approachable than they are without a class syllabus, facilitator, or general plan. I am happy to have found this book and would definitely recommend for anyone looking to expand their horizons and library with some of the "greats". It's never too late to read!

I am only just getting into this book and I must say, Mrs. Bauer know's exactly what she is talking about. About to toot my own horn, but I can see that Bauer has her finger on what it takes to not only have a well-educated mind but also a refined one - an invaluable trait that all of us should aspire to embody.If you are interested in becoming a more refined and enlightened person, this book is for you. If you have zero appreciation for that, then you should go watch an episode of The Kardashians right now!

This book is ideal for anyone interested in reading and truly understanding great works of literature. It is perfect for anyone who is hard wired for a regimented system. I managed to do quite well getting through college without really ever reading and understanding the texts I was required to read, as an adult I wanted to try to read these texts and actually appreciate them. I concluded that perhaps though my comprehension was fine, my critical approach needed revising. I picked this book up because I was not quite ready to read the rather large "how to read a book" by Adler. I have since read both books and this one in my opinion, is a little easier to read. I. Recommend reading this first, then Adler's book after.I like "well educated mind" because it provides a system, and part of that is that she provides questions you should be answering on your various reads specific to each genre. This is immediately helpful in making sure you are doing more than just reading but actually engaging the text. She provides a system of journal writing that I have found quite helpful and now use for every book I read. Too many times I plowed through a great work and afterward had literarily no idea or appreciation for what I just read, this book was perfect to get me to truly understand great works.
