I'll admit that I have a bookshelf full of cookbooks and a decent section committed to alcoholic creations... The problem is that while I can easily use 90%+ of the recipes in the cookbooks, I've almost never found more than 1 or 2 cocktail recipes per book that I can make without a pilgrimage to the fancy hipster liquor store. That's why I can honestly say, THANK ALL THAT IS HOLY for this book. With a single bottle of booze and a few items from you pantry or the grocery store (where you're headed anyway for dinner ingredients), you can make a cocktail worthy of, well, a bar. Please don't take this as a knock on mixology or awesome bartenders - they're great! But just like I don't have a pizza oven, a salamander broiler, or a sous vide set up (fine...I do have a sous vide set up), I often find that I don't have some of the rare bitters and liqueurs called for in most of my cocktail books. OH! And as an added bonus, there are a bunch of large batch cocktails in this book that are fantastic for when you don't want to be stuck at the bar for your entire party. I. LOVE. THIS. BOOK. Buy it. You won't regret it.

I've been slowly making my way through The One-Bottle Cocktail since it came out in March. The reason I love this book is that it taught me a new way of looking at them: Focus on the non-alcoholic ingredients primarily for the flavor (fresh juices, spices, herbs, fruit, and teas) instead of liquors. I’ve learned a ton from this book about which flavors work together, how certain flavors interact with certain liquors, and how much the flavor of certain herbs and fruits can vary from plant to plant and piece to piece.The other thing I love about this book is that it has bonus drinks at the end of each section, noting where you can substitute the same liquor from that section into other drinks in the book.We're looking forward to drinking our way through the rest of this book. It will really be great this spring and summer when we will have easy access to edible flowers and herbs. If you haven't picked up a copy yet, you need to.

I don't make a ton of cocktails at home. I have a few that I rotate through (Manhattan, Negroni, Division Bell), but that's about it. The main reason is that keeping a bar stocked with all the vermouths, tinctures, and liqueurs necessary to make a much wider array of drinks is unrealistic--my collection of spirits takes up enough space as it is.This book opens up a whole world of new flavors for me to experience--it takes the half-drunk bottles of spirits I already keep around and ups their utility big time, using ingredients I either already have in my fridge or that I can acquire at the grocery store around the corner. The photos are beautiful, the writing is clear and approachable, and there's a nice array of drinks that run the gamut from very simple and quick to make, to more complex and impressive options that are still easily achievable for everyone.This is a gem!

I’ve been following Maggie’s writing for years, dating back to her days at Serious Eats. I tried one of her drinks last December at my cocktail party based on a promo for the book. It was a huge hit. And I continue to be impressed with this gorgeous book. It has a great mix of single drinks and recipes for parties (can’t wait to try out Mr Tingles Punch). Some have just 3 ingredients, require a fair bit of prep and novel ingredients (I’m not yet ready for the egg white). We don’t drink liquors that often but it’s a great book to have on hand to impress. Also, makes a good gift for those who like to entertain (gave a copy to my Aunt for her birthday)

This book will push you out of your comfort zone, and that's a good thing. If you're looking for recipes for familiar or run of the mill cocktails, this is not the book for you. However if you're looking to try something new, experiment with unfamiliar ingredients, and surprise yourself with unexpected flavors, then buckle up - you're in for quite a ride! As promised, the author delivers recipes that require just one liquor - choose from vodka, gin, bourbon, etc (drinks are separated into chapters by liquor). Planning is required because many of the ingredients are items you may not keep stocked in your pantry (although I'm beginning to wonder why I don't). These drinks require fresh ingredients including fruit, herbs, and juices, so flip through the pages and develop a shopping list before your next grocery or market run. With a variety of single drink and pitcher recipes, the author provides options for a snowy night in or a summer backyard party. A variety of sweet and savory ideas will keep you guessing, experimenting, and thinking about your own twists on the original recipes.

A phenomenal book of recipes; I've had it for 12 hours and have already made large batches of two cocktails in here. All the recipes are not only simple (and don't require a garden full of unobtainable fruits or an expensive cabinet of liquors), but they are thoughtfully balanced, creative, and just goddam delicious. Lots of vegetal cocktails (e.g., that feature fennel, arugula, etc.) which are my absolute favorite.

This is such a fun cocktail book. I love hosting cocktail parties, but always end up having to search all over town for some random obscure ingredient. Have you ever tried to find rhubarb bitters? Not an easy task, I can tell you (although they sure are tasty). I once spent an insane amount of money on some high-end blackberry liqueur (the only brand I could find). Used a small amount in a cocktail, and by the time I thought to use the liqueur again it tasted like raisins. What a waste. With this excellent book, I can focus my energies on what is most fun--making fresh and interesting cocktails. I can't wait to try a Breakfast of Champions (bourbon + honey nut cheerios-infused milk!) or the gorgeous-looking Passport to Chile (finally, a use for that bottle of pisco I had all but given up on!). This book contains endless inspiration for future cocktail parties--and a ton of creative ways to make tasty cocktails from a simple bottle of booze.
