This is one of the finest book I have ever read on the history of the struggle of the Oromo women against the oppression of the empire and in their gendered society. This is a group which was kept in shadow for long time. For one thing, the Oromo history within the Ethiopian history is often characterized by neglect and misconception. The case of the Oromo women is exacerbated by the gender aspect of the issue. Therefore, she tried to bring to the attention, the story of a marginalized group within a marginalized people. In this connection, a sub title of the book speaks for itself, "The Forgotten Women in Ethiopian History." I would add that they are also the forgotten people in the Oromo discourses, be it modern or traditional.In my opinion, the book tries to deal with the history of the Oromo women from the viewpoint of the Oromo nationalism and Oromo identity, "Oromtitti." It provides rich accounts of the Oromo women's who resisted the incorporation into the Ethiopian Empire, and resisted the occupation. It talks about Oromo women sold into slavery, and how some of them had a lasting impact on their people. It does deal with role of the Oromo women in the current Oromo struggles for self-determination, albeit, in a piecemeal fashion. It does not deal with Oromo legends, which explains the gender roles among Oromo. Nor it deals with the ateetee and siiqee institutions. Nevertheless, the book makes significant contribution for the Oromo and Ethiopian studies. I recommend the book for any person who want to know about the Oromo women, the Oromo politics and history...Thank you Ballatach for wonderful work.

I have been interested in learning how to count cards for decades. I've picked up a number of books over that time that told me that card counting was 1) simple, 2) easy, and 3) something an average person could learn with a weekend or so of practice.However I realized that if those statements were true, the casinos would either have to stop playing blackjack, or go bankrupt.Since neither one of those things were happening, it became pretty obvious to me that card counting was NOT 1) simple, 2) NOT easy, and 3) NOT something an average person could learn with a weekend or so of practice. Instead it seemed that the books that claimed it was easy only served to give people a sense of false confidence, because blackjack became more popular and the casinos sure weren't having a problem paying their electric bills.So, I decided that I didn't want to use those books to learn how to count cards.For reasons not related to this review I recently regained my interest in card counting. I didn't want to waste my money on a book that would simply set me up to be cannon fodder for the casino, so I did some research and decided to purchase BLACKJACK ATTACK.This is NOT a book to teach you basic card counting. This is NOT a book that will teach you a simple system. This is NOT a beginners book.As such it is going to be a while before I will be able to use it, or to be honest, even understand all of it.This is a book that works with serious mathematics. It is NOT for everybody.Which is EXACTLY why it is the best book in the field, and one that I am very, very happy I purchased.

I was stunned when I read some of the negative reviews. It was apparent that some of those individuals were looking for a "winning system." This book doesn't provide you with some magical counting system. Rather, the author discusses the nuances of card counting. Don't expect to learn "which system is best." You won't. (Different methods play better with different rule variations.) But, you will learn how to think about the game. I used a counting method before I read this book. I still use the same one. But my approach to the game has changed. For example, at one time I dismissed the importance of deck penetration. No longer. Also, I didn't think that the dealer standing on soft 17 would make that much difference over hitting on soft 17. Wrong. So, although I use the same counting method, my game selection has changed considerably. I didn't learn to count because of this book. But I AM a better player because of this book. And that's because of how I now select my games, not because this book supplied some magical counting system.

The OBG Classics edition published September 11, 2017, claims to be "the new translation." But IF it is somehow new -- and, by the way, no translator is identified -- what exactly has been translated? What is new about it? It is still written in the difficult-to-understand Middle English Chaucer used, and apart from spelling (or misspelling?) "his" as "hise" in line-1 [see NOTE at end] and throwing in some extra commas, this is pretty much the standard version. It is handsomely formatted and has an active TOC, but no introduction, no clarifications of archaic words, nothing but the seemingly original Middle English text. Calling itself "the new translation" strongly suggests this has been translated into easier-to-understand Modern English, but such is not the case here. Chaucer certainly rates 5-stars, but I have deducted one for the misrepresentation.FYI: An excellent Modern English version will be found in the Kindle Store for $.99 by A. S. Kline.NOTE: The first line normally reads: "Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote...." The words "shoures" and "soote" are each two syllables in Middle English pronunciation; thus the entire line rightly has the number of accented syllables Chaucer intended. If "his" (a one-syllable word) were improperly changed to "hise" (turning it into a two-syllable word, pronounced his-uh) -- as is done here -- that adds an unintended and, therefore, unacceptable extra syllable. I have to assume this is merely a typo; but how many other such errors are contained herein?

If you are going to read The Canterbury Tales, this is the way to go. The Middle-English may seem intimidating at first, but it is easier than one might think to sound out and understand. Of course, the annotation helps quite a bit too. These tales and their frame perfectly capture medieval life with it's lively characters and various settings. Ranging from poetic diversions, to dramatic, to adventures, all the the way to gruesome fables, and plenty of very funny (and memorable) bawdy humor. This earthy group of classic stories has something for everyone. The modern translation is also worth having as a companion, but this fine paperback is the one for authenticity.

Let's get this clear at the start: This is a review of Jill Mann's edition of the Canterbury Tales in its Kindle version. (It's a shame that Amazon can't distinguish between different editions of the classics when posting reviews! -- hint!) About the Tales themselves, I'll say only that they are both a classic and a blast, and if you can handle the Middle English, you have to read them in that language. Jill Mann's editorial work is smart and thorough, too. The print edition is a bargain at the price -- again, if you're OK reading Middle English. The Kindle edition, though was a little clumsy to use -- though, to be fair, I don't see how all the glosses and notes could have been presented better in a e-book. Wait, yes I can. The glosses on individual words and expressions are easy to find; the more extensive notes, which are very valuable, are not. It shouldn't have been hard to add a marginal symbol to reference a Note. Hence it's only four stars, not five. But it may well be the best e-book version on the market.

Here is a brief synopsis.At the Tabard Inn, a tavern in Southwark, near London, the narrator joins a company of twenty-nine pilgrims. The pilgrims, like the narrator, are traveling to the shrine of the martyr Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury. The narrator gives a descriptive account of twenty-seven of these pilgrims, including a Knight, Squire, Yeoman, Prioress, Monk, Friar, Merchant, Clerk, Man of Law, Franklin, Haberdasher, Carpenter, Weaver, Dyer, Tapestry-Weaver, Cook, Shipman, Physician, Wife, Parson, Plowman, Miller, Manciple, Reeve, Summoner, Pardoner, and Host. (He does not describe the Second Nun or the Nun’s Priest, although both characters appear later in the book.) The Host, whose name, we find out in the Prologue to the Cook’s Tale, is Harry Bailey, suggests that the group ride together and entertain one another with stories. He decides that each pilgrim will tell two stories on the way to Canterbury and two on the way back. Whomever he judges to be the best storyteller will receive a meal at Bailey’s tavern, courtesy of the other pilgrims.I won't go into detail about all the tales that are told except to say that I found them witty, entertaining, and thoughtful.

Yeah I know, the word "Jihad" conjures up all manner of ignorant prejudices about Islam and the Middle East. The authors made a poor choice of words when they came up with the title for this release. Nonetheless, this is probably one of the best setting books released for Hunter: the Reckoning. Part of the Year of the Scarab setting, this book takes a closer look at Egypt and the Middle East. In fact, the introduction even goes a long way towards trying to dispell western stereotypes about the Middle East (even recommending further reading and viewing for more info on Islam, Arabic culture and the Middle East), and it does a wonderful job immersing itself in Arabic and Middle Eastern culture.The first chapter introduces us to a number of Kiswah (the Arabic name for Imbued) and provides us with information on the Middle East. Theres a lexicon of terms used by Middle Eastern Hunters (all of whom share Arabic for some mystical reason; generally its held as proof that God chose the Hunters, as Arabic is seen as the language of God), as well as a basic introduction to Arabic culture. The major religions of the Middle East, such as Islam, Christianity and Judaism, are all mentioned. Then theres the "survival guide", which mentions general information on what to do, where to go and what monsters exist in Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Syria and several other Middle Eastern countries. Chapter Two goes into the Kiswah's first attempts at working together, as well as theories on their purpose and origins, ranging from righteous Muslims who believe they were inspired by God to pre-Islamic Arab to skeptical scientists, and pretty much everything in between. It also looks at how Arab (and Jewish) Hunters view the different Creeds using Arabic and kabbalistic terms. As the book points out, there is a great deal of diversity in the Middle East beyond Arabs; Persians, Kurds, Turks, Yezidis, Druze, Bahai and lots more too. In addition, special mention is made of women's roles in society.Chapter five finally starts giving us useful out-of-character information. An examination of the differences in theme and setting is given, along with some character creation guidelines. There aren't "special rules" for creating Kiswah that differ from mainstream western Hunters. What is given, though, is information on how certain Abilities and Backgrounds are going to be different in a Middle Eastern setting, along with some information on Abilities or Backgrounds that are very likely and which ones should be restricted (like Firearms and Arsenal, due to heavy restrictions on guns in many countries). In addition, an alternative look at the Creeds and Virtues is given, one which draws upon Arabic and Islamic culture. These changes are merely cosmetic, but do help establish the setting much better than the western names. In addition, a handful of new Edges are presented. Theres also a couple new systems, one for Al Ha'it (True Faith basically) and one for the Middle Eastern version of the Word (which always appears in Arabic).The book closes out with a nice little chapter of ST specific material. This chapter goes more into detail on the setting, the reasoning behind the Word being in Arabic, Al Ha'it and even the secret police of the Kiswah. It closes up with a look at the Jinn (generic term for monsters) and some Kiswah of note. But this chapter should definately be left to STs, if only for the enjoyment of the game. Overall, I found this to be a wonderful book. While I'm not a big fan of the title, it really does do a nice job removing alot of stereotypes about the Middle East. The book is steeped in Arabic, Islamic and Middle Eastern culture, and makes it possible for anyone to understand and appreciate the setting. I strongly recommend that Hunter: the Reckoning players and STs check out this book, if only for a change of pace and an exciting new location, and any others in the Year of the Scarab series.

Father Morris' book offers sincere help on how to attain peace and serenity through trusting in God's will for us. Father Morris provides some meaningful insight for coping with the burdensome problems that we all face at one time or another. Very inspirational book! Thank you, Father Jonathan Morris!

My far from religious, thirty year old son, introduced me to "the Promise". Needless to say, I was surprised, no shocked,when I saw it was written by a priest! Then he read "God Wants You Happy"!As I enjoyed both books, I ordered the Serenity book without his recommendation. It is my favorite. It was hard to put down, as it just flowed with comforting thoughts. I will be rereading it many times over the years. Fr spends much time on achieving serenity, and has great suggestions.I have ordered a copy of this book as a Christmas gift, for a friend going through hard times, as I am sure it will help.Unfortunately, my son is still not a church-goer, but that he likes Fr.'s books shows their appeal to those who are not practicing a faith. For an easy to understand, but thoughtful book, I feel this book could be recommended to anyone. I will find out if my son has bought this one yet, if not, I will be back for another.

This book helped me get over a bad depression by the helpful and hopeful content.The author explains the Serenity Prayer so that the reader can accept the things you can't change, the courage to change the things you can and the wisdom to know the difference.

I love Fr. Morris seeing him often on Fox News, so I was ready to like the book. I've also liked the Serenity Prayer from the first time I heard it. The book was even better than expected. As you read it, you are reminded rather frequently to pray the Serenity prayer. I found myself doing it and the act of reading became even more calming and inspiring. F. Morris speaks of religion, of course, but he also includes anecdotes--some quite personal--to illustrate his analysis. He speaks, for instance, of his gay sister and the issues with acceptance in the family. That was fascinating. Sometimes we are advised to think of an issue in this way, he says, "will it matter--in a week, in a month, in a year?" etc. That's always a way to put things into perspective. But Jonathan goes a step further and says that in our heart of hearts we need to think in terms of this question, "will it matter in eternity?" The book might be a game changer.

By far the best book he's written and I have them all. I highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with finding their own inner peace and happiness in the midst of chaos called life. It really has made me a more peaceful individual and I refer back to certain chapters whenever I'm feeling tense/stressed and I just love the prayers he has at the end of each chapter! This book is a "must read."

It is a beautiful prayer about the Serenity Prayer that so many people struggle with during life. Fr. Jonathan is a wonderful writer and it brings the prayer to life with specific and current examples.

I love, love, love this book. I don't say I love to many things. Pastor Morris' writing, explanations and examples are spot on. I have been a frequent user of the Serenity Prayer for years. This book has solidified some of my own thoughts about that prayer and has also enhanced my understanding, as well. I'll be keeping this in my permanent library.
