The concept of infinity is full of fascinating twists and turns, like the fact that some infinities are larger than others, or that is an infinite set of numbers between 0 and 1. It all can make your head spin, and you consider other facts, starting with the natural numbers, moving to integers, rational numbers, real numbers, and finally complex numbers. Each set is infinite, but each has increasingly more numbers.This book opens a view of math beyond what most know.

A fascinating and mostly understandable introduction. I wish the author had "shown his work" a little more instead of sometimes skipping ahead in an algebraic problem. It was also uncomfortably irreverent at places, with the author loving to not only show classic nude male statues, but also to render his own drawings of them instead for the next illustration.

Good survey of infinity as a working concept in math and science. Interesting artwork is a lovely surprise that is not part of the usual popular maths fare.

i just found this book a little boring and not my style. it my be great for someone else though.

About the Author

Matthew Desmond is a professor of sociology at Princeton University. After receiving his Ph.D. in 2010 from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, he joined the Harvard Society of Fellows as a Junior Fellow. He is the author of four books, including Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City (2016), which won the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Critics Circle Award, and Carnegie Medal, and PEN / John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction. The principal investigator of The Eviction Lab, Desmond’s research focuses on poverty in America, city life, housing insecurity, public policy, racial inequality, and ethnography. He is the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, the American Bar Association’s Silver Gavel Award, and the William Julius Wilson Early Career Award. A contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine, Desmond was listed in 2016 among the Politico 50, as one of “fifty people across the country who are most influencing the national political debate.”

Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond is an important book that I suspect will be referred to for many years in sociology classes across the nation. In this book, the author takes people into some of the poorest neighborhoods of America and what it means to be evicted.This book follows along with real people who live in the 'hood and what puts them in precarious financial situations so as to be dealing with unscrupulous landlords. Some of the tenants have problems with drugs, low paying jobs, a lack of child support, child delinquency, physical and mental disabilities and other similar social problems.As for the landlords, they are shown to be smarter than we think they are. They know who they can make the most money off of and they employ a variety of schemes to make money off of the poor. We also see how some tenants abuse the properties where they live, so landlords know that they are often taking a gamble when buying houses - even derelict properties - and renting them out to certain types of tenants. We also learn about how the government plays a role in all of this behavior.This is a well written book. There is strong language but it's the way that people speak, so it's not for show.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for writing an honest review. I have been involved with low income housing in Milwaukee for over three decades as a landlord and as an attorney for landlords and tenants. I know the neighborhoods and characters in this book all too well. If you want insight into poor people’s lives as they struggle to keep a roof over their heads, you should buy this book. The other reviews are right about how gripping those stories are. But if you are a graduate of Trump University and think you’ll get some insight into how to make obscene profits by renting to the poor you’ll find anecdotes but no real verified research about the business of landlording. Most significantly, you will not learn the truth that bringing evictions totally destroyed the rental business of Sherrena, the leading landlord protagonist.Strangely, though Desmond interviewed 30 landlords he only focuses on two. One is Tobin, a mobile home park operator on Milwaukee’s south side, which is largely white and Hispanic. Tobin indeed makes a lot of money but that is because he does not have to maintain or repair 95% of the “dwellings” in his park. Tobin rents out a concrete slab with utility connections and the tenants buy or bring their own trailers and pay their own utilities. As owners they are responsible for the exterior and interior condition of their dwelling. Only 5% of the trailers are owned by the park and rented to tenants as a living unit. So Tobin is a landlord only in the sense that you might have a landlord this summer when you drive your Winnebago to a Jellystone Park and pay rent for the parking pad and utility hookups.Then we have Sherrena who with her husband runs about 18 buildings (mostly two-family flats) in the African-American neighborhoods on the north side of Milwaukee. In a chapter titled “The ‘Hood is Good” Desmond blithely accepts Sherrena’s boast that she has a net worth of $2 million and nets $10,000 a month in rental income. Desmond is honest in portraying the many difficulties Sherrena has in collecting rent from her struggling tenants but he doesn’t do the background research (available from local court records) about the many thousands of dollars in unpaid rents and damaged units which sort of cut into profits a little bit.As to her supposed net worth of $2 million, that averages out to $111,000 for each of these 18 ghetto properties - certainly far more than some of the real dumpy ones are worth – but the author does not research the amounts of the recorded mortgages against these properties (ranging between $64,000 and $119,200) which further greatly reduce the claimed net worth. That would have been revealed in the many foreclosures filed against Sherrena’s properties which started within a year after Desmond’s visit to Milwaukee.So when this book came out in 2016 the curious reader might want to know: if the ‘hood is good for the landlord how much better has it gotten since the author did his study in 2009? Research so far shows that not one of Sherrena’s properties remains in her ownership. Starting in 2010 many were bulldozed, went into city ownership via foreclosure for nonpayment of real estate taxes or today sit as haunting, blighted eyesores. A few were foreclosed by lenders, were fixed up and are under new ownership. Evictions by Sherrena ended in the year 2010. So did her non-existent profit. She joins many small-time under-capitalized landlords who have gone bust in Milwaukee and elsewhere since the Great Recession started in 2008 with the bursting of the housing bubble.Please note that I still give the book 4 stars. Its significant defects in reporting on the “profit” aspect of its subtitle are outweighed by the important and detailed research on the effects of eviction in creating and perpetuating poverty. A better and expanded housing voucher program for low income tenants is much needed. Landlords nationwide should join Matt Desmond’s call for its implementation.

"Evicted" is the story of eight families in Milwaukee, WI--six families struggling mightily to pay the rent on their increasingly crappy apartments, and two sets of landlords. The landlords are either a new breed of venture capitalists or merely slumlords, depending on your perspective. Since roughly 2000, rents have shot up while the properties have either stayed the same or declined, so that by 2013 about one out of every three poor families spent seventy percent of their income on housing. Think about that for a minute.As a result of this, poor families are always one crisis--really one unexpected expense--away from being evicted. The ramifications of being evicted on one's emotional, financial, and physical states are profound. First, once someone gets evicted, finding any kind of housing becomes extremely difficult--one of the ladies called 90 apartments before she found one that would take her and her two kids. You can place blame on these struggling families if you want to, but the fact of the matter is it's extraordinarily difficult for them to succeed, or even to just get by.I found this book very interesting--to say I enjoyed it would be wrong because much of it is depressing. It made the problems of the urban poor personal. I quite liked some of them and I was rooting for them--"Please, let this landlord call her back!" I felt bad when Vanetta went to prison for armed robbery after her hours were cut, and I cheered when Scott finally got clean. I read it all the way through the endnotes, which are also quite interesting and provide some insights or background info. I really wanted to find out how all the families were doing today (the book takes place in 2008-2009) because I became attached to them and had come to care about them. Unfortunately the author doesn't tell you what became of them, although if I had to guess I'd say their lives continued on in more or less the same vein.A word on the swearing: this is a well written, professionally done sociological study. The author only uses swears when he's quoting one of the people he interviewed. If you were desperate, poor, depressed and angry, you, too might be given to curse words.If you enjoy sociological and/or cultural topics, if you care about equality in America, if you are interested in how grinding poverty affects families, pick this up. A beautiful book by a beautiful artist. Understanding creativity is an elusive endeavor, yet this lovely book will ably serve as your guide as you make the search. Not only are the exercises and suggestions brilliant, the book itself is a perfect example of creative beauty. For someone just getting started as an artist this book would be very inspiring, but for the more experienced artist who might fall into a creative slump this book is a perfect antidote, giving practical exercises to awaken the senses and spark new ideas and creative paths.. I have followed Philippa Stanton on Instagram for several years and her book is truly a work of art, eagerly anticipated and happily received.

I’ve been looking forward to this book for some time. It’s a beautiful book visually but the words are equally brilliant! If you’ve ever struggled with your creativity, suffered from perfectionism, or had a dreadful art teacher who made you doubt your talent, then you’ll want Philippa in your corner.

I was hopeful but the Aesthetic appears haphazard, junky, and not all that created in an output/or outcome where you say, wow...that evokes a reaction that is Art...only reaction I feel is Meh...this could have been a lot better and certainly not worth 16 dollars. I will be rapidly returning.

Wow! One of my students forgot this book in my classroom one afternoon (I teach middle school); so I picked it up to see what it was about. I couldn't put it down! Probably not since I read, "Number the Stars," have I been more moved and engrossed in a story that is both touching and relevant. I'm hoping to get funds to buy a class set and study this with my classes next year. Great job Mr. Gratz and thank you Karley for forgetting your library book ;-)

I am a fourth grade teacher and have been looking for a new book to read aloud and I think this is the one! This book includes figurative language, lots of connections between the characters, historically accurate details that could be explored much further, connections with modern issues regarding refugees, and so much more. There is definitely some mature content discussed as Josef’s father recounts some of his experiences in a concentration camp, and the word “pissed” is used once. Would recommend this book for mature young readers only, or as a read aloud where an adult can be present to answer questions about our not always so pleasant history. This book is a page turner, but be prepared to have tissues at hand! I cried more than once. Without giving away too many details, just know this isn’t your typical “happily ever after” novel. It is a very realistic fiction that deals with the real challenges of being a refugee. People die, are separated, lost, reunited and go on to make an impact. Pick up this book whether you’re 10 or 50 for a great book that is an easy read!!

REFUGEE powerfully connects the perils of refugees past and the plight of refugees present in this timely story. Alan Gratz carefully weaves the settings of WWII Nazi Germany, 1990’s Cuba, and modern day Aleppo in these three intricate stories that journey separately and ultimately together. The daunting journeys of Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud will grip young readers and show them that being a refugee is not a choice, but it is a matter of life and death, and the journey to find peace and a place to live in safety is far from a crime. I hope young readers will move through the alternating stories of these young, brave refugees, and wonder if they would ever be so bold and so courageous, and when they hear stories on the news or read the headlines, they will remember Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud, and remember that there are children currently running for their lives and then wonder what they can do to help.

I like to read a book before I give it to one of my great-grandsons. I bought this for our ten year old. It was very engaging, but upon reading it, I elected to shelve it for another year or two. I think a 12 to 13 year old boy or girl would enjoy it.

All of us have heard parts of these stories, but when written from the viewpoints of early adolescents, sadness almost overwhelms me. How can others find the cruelty to treat children this way? How can it be that children must endure such terrible experiences in their young lives? Alan respects the children’s feelings in his storytelling, but shows how they learn to take charge, how they learn they “must” take charge to help. They give up their childhood to help save their families. There is hope in every part; even in the darkest passages, small kindnesses appear. Learning of children’s lives in all parts of our world is something that will help readers gain sympathy for those who need help. Alan Gratz wrote a long afterword about his research for each time period, and ways we can help today.

I'm a recently certified Open Water diver. I had read the author's first book while I was in the midst of my certification class, and I was happy to see a book on AOW as I am considering doing that certification next year. I appreciated the discussion of the aftermath of being involved with or witnessing a diving accident. Getting the AOW certification not longer after being OW certified seems to be a common occurrence, regardless or not the diver is ready for the next step. I've seen divers at the local quarry I knew were go through AOW dives and was surprised those particular divers were in the midst of AOW as they didn't seem "ready" (issues setting up their gear, etc.). I was glad to see the author's discussion of whether or not a diver was even ready for AOW, and that "remedial" (for lack of a better work) work on certain things might be needed before a diver was ready for the advanced class. Confirmed my thinking that doing some private sessions with my instructor for further work on buoyancy and kicks is a good thing before AOW. I highly recommend this book for new divers, and even those who have already gone through AOW as it touches topics that don't seem to be addressed often.

A must read for instructors as well as students. This book provides an excellent roundup of all the best wisdom that the Progressive Scuba Instruction movement of recent years has to offer. It serves as an exhaustive guide for the certified diver seeking advanced training, and it's also a manifesto of sorts for advanced instructors. The message to both is that advanced scuba instruction is about upping your game: your knowledge, your skills, your safety and your confidence. Advanced scuba instruction that fails to do this is just wasted time and money.

I have had this book for a couple months and would read a bit here and there when I had the chance and I got a chapter or two into it. Well I got some down time and started reading it again and I couldn't put it down once I got going on it. I am a tec diver and have had my fair share of training. And this book really made me think about the past training I've had and I recognize the good and the bad experiences that I did not think about before. It does not matter what your experience level is with diving, this book is for all divers! I highly recommend this book to all divers. James really brings out some amazing points for training and some fun ways of doing new training. I am not going to give any details away, you just need to get a copy of this book and find out for yourself!!!

He pulls no punches and tells it straight forward like it is! If you want excellent info on Advanced Level Diving... this is the book!!!

Jim's done a wonderful job... Should be required reading for anyone starting to get serious about recreational diving.

Even without the sexual intimacy, Julie and David once again grow close and David finds himself helping with much more than just college applications. This book is about love and friendship and what relationships can look like when you truly love someone. The characters are all struggling with their own issues, but their love and dependence on one another helps them to become their own version of a family. This was my first novel by this author and I loved McCauley's writing style. His storytelling was witty and clever, never dull or trite. There's depth to the story but without the intense emotional weight that can bring you down. McCauley keeps it light even when the subject matters get heavy.I highly recommend this read! Â

A feel good novel with an unexpected in the middle. I loved getting to know the characters and will miss them now that they are gone. The author made them all perfectly imperfect. I hope he’s written more.

Stephen McCauley's latest (and most delightful) comedy of manners reminded me of a fascinating book I read years ago by Shakespeare scholar Marjorie Garber called "Sex and Real Estate: Why We Love Houses." Garber's witty take on real estate was that after a certain age, many people transfer their lust from bodies to houses. In My Ex-Life, we meet an aging couple--a gay man and a straight woman--who were briefly married and who fell out of touch. What brings them together is the threat of losing their homes--he on the west coast, she on the east. This elegantly written and well-plotted novel takes us on their journey to reclaim their space and discover what makes a house a home. I'm such a huge fan of this author--who ranks among the best of the comic novelists writing today--and highly recommend all of his books.

David is having something of a mid-life crisis. Still smarting from the recent end of a relationship with his boyfriend, he then finds out that he's about to lose the sweet rental deal in San Francisco that he's enjoyed for many years. When the daughter of his ex-wife asks for David's help getting into college, which is how he makes his living, it seems a trip to New England, and down memory lane, is just the thing to give him perspective.“My Ex-Life” is the latest book by an author whose work, although not prolific, is consistent over the years. His books are generally gently paced, with no manufactured drama, reflecting what always feels like a very realistic slice of life. I did not find the book as outrageously funny as some of the blurbs suggest. There are certainly some good lines and funny situations, but the humor is almost always tinged with a hint of melancholy that makes it more bittersweet than laugh-out-loud.David is a very relatable character. Like many of McCauley's protagonists, he's a bit of an everyman rather than the physically perfect, perpetually young gay men found in most gay fiction. His ex-wife Julie is also very interesting, and over the course of the story, the picture of how these two unlikely individuals came to be married, and then divorced, becomes clear. Julie's daughter Mandy also plays a significant role in the story. Not only is she pivotal in bringing David and Julie together, but her coming-of-age struggle over the coarse of the summer provides much of the drama in the story line as well.The town of Beauport is also something of a character in itself. We see it largely through the eyes of David, who comes not as a tourist, but as someone who sees it as the typical New England seaside tourist destination that it is. It's a quite unvarnished picture which includes a few colorful townspeople as well.
