At the time this book was published in 1971, J. Deotis Roberts was a professor of theology at Howard University; he has also written other books such as Black Religion, Black Theology: The Collected Essays of J. Deotis Roberts (African American Religious Thought and Life),Bonhoeffer and King: Speaking Truth to Power,The Prophethood of Black Believers: An African American Political Theology for Ministry etc. [NOTE: page numbers below refer to the original 205-page paperback edition.]He wrote in the Preface of this 1971 book, “The present volume is an introduction to soul theology. 'Soul' sums up the black experience, whether religious or secular, better than any other term. Here we have attempted a Christian theological interpretation of the soul religious experience as we understand it as a Christian and as a theologian whose face is black. Soul theology is Black Theology… In the following pages much will be said about ‘black liberation.’ We are aware of the gospel of freedom to which Christ as Liberator has called us. But, as Christians, black and white, we surely know that separation, however rewarding to set the record straight, CANNOT be an ultimate Christian goal. Separation must give way to RECONCILIATION. The gospel is a reconciling as well as a liberating gospel and Christ is at once Liberator and Reconciler. At the same time that black Christians are set free they are called together with all other Christians to a ministry of reconciliation.“Reconciliation, between blacks and whites, is a two-way street. It depends as much upon what whites WILL DO to make conditions in race relations better as it does upon what blacks WILL NOT DO… Reconciliation must be based upon a oneness in nature and grace between all people upon the principle of equity. EQUALITY belongs to the time of integration. It assumes that blacks must earn the right to be equal---to be accepted into the American mainstream. Equity, on the other hand, belongs to the time of Black Power, black pride, awareness, and self-determination. Equity assumes that all men are naturally equal. Human dignity is a birthright. Black Theology affirms this and goes on to root equity, as the only principle of black-white reconciliation, in the Christian understanding of creation and redemption.”He begins the book by stating, "It is my view that liberation and reconciliation must be considered at the same time and in relation to each other. The all-or-nothing, victory-or-death approach to race relations appears to be more rhetoric than reality, even to those who hold it. The same may be said concerning the ‘black’ or ‘white’ conception of ethics. In the long run, ‘gray’ is more honest and realistic.” (Pg. 13-14) He adds, "Can there be a constructive interpretation of this new militancy which can be reinterpreted and even sponsored by the Christian faith with its revolutionary message? It is the opinion of this author that the latter is possible and that this is the proper mission of a Black Theology." (Pg. 17)He notes that “Those of us who have black skin and who are conscious of our blackness, but who have passed through various stages of racial protest, face a problem of ‘internal communication’ with young, angry, militant black youth who have just discovered what it means to be black in a white racist society… Many blacks who are not Christians are associated with ‘the religion of Black Power.’ A black theologian who operates from the Christian faith has difficulty being heard in this company, however angry he may be… The present writer takes his stand within the Christian theological circle.” (Pg. 21)He continues, “A Christian theologian is not an interpreter of the religion of Black Power. He, as black theologian, may be the interpreter of Afro-American Christianity… But he is attempting to understand the Christian faith in the light of his people’s experience… His theological task is a type of ministry to blacks and whites. It is a priestly ministry to blacks… The black theologian’s role is that of a prophet as well. His message will often be unwelcomed by blacks as well as by whites. But… he will need to speak of reconciliation beyond confrontation and liberation whatever the risk and whatever the personal cost.” (Pg. 21-22) He adds, “It is the goal of a worthy Black Theology to lead both blacks and whites to an authentic Christian existence… Authentic existence for blacks and whites can only be realized finally in reconciliation between equals in the body of Christ.” (Pg. 24-25)He explains, “Liberation is revolutionary---for blacks it points to what ought to be. Black Christians desire radical and rapid social change in America as a matter of survival. Black Christian faith is avowedly revolutionary and, therefore, it may speak to this need with great force.” (Pg. 27)He observes, “Many blacks are turned off by the idea that their suffering as a people may have some purpose… Whenever someone makes the suggestion that perhaps the clue to the black man’s chosenness is his suffering, my mind raises real question. The crucial question is representative. Is it necessary that such oppression and undeserved suffering continue in order that grace may abound? My suspicion is aroused further by the fact that the affirmative attitude toward human suffering comes from the side of the oppressor and not from the oppressed themselves. This leads me to suggest that whatever understanding of our chosenness emerges in a Black Theology must take under serious account the fact that the black man’s experience has been purged in the fires of suffering. But our interpretation of chosenness must at the same time hold up the promise of a better day. The uses of our past must be for the redemption of our future.” (Pg. 52-53)Later, he notes, "The God of Moses, the God of the exodus, has been real to black people. This God is one of deliverance from bondage. The God who assures the Israelites constantly, 'as I was with Moses, even so I will be with thee' has comforted, strengthened, and brought great assurance to black Christians throughout all their years of oppression in this country. Thus the God of the exodus is the black man's God." (Pg. 99)He acknowledges, “It appears to me that that black theologian has much to learn from existentialism as he seeks to develop a helpful understanding of human nature. When I refer to this self-reflective movement, I do not particularly have in mind nihilism or pessimism; neither do I cherish its preoccupation with the absurd, with death, or with rebellion. It is not the posture of existentialists who confront life WITHOUT GOD, but those who are conscious that man stands BEFORE GOD that is most attractive for the formulation of a Christian anthropology.” (Pg. 106)He clarifies, “The black Messiah encounters the black Christian on the level of personal experience in the black church in its setting in the black community enabling black Christians to overcome their identity crisis---having been alienated, despised, and rejected by the larger community and even in so-called integrated congregations. I do not take the figure of a black Messiah in literal historical sense. It is rather the symbol or a myth with profound meaning for black people. It is, therefore, necessary to give some attention to what we mean by a symbol or a myth.” (Pg. 130) Later, he adds, “Since the black experience has been disregarded in other versions of Christology, there is a need to make Christ and his message speak directly to the black man.” (Pg. 136)He states, “The black Christ participates in the black experience. In some sense Christ makes contact with what the black Christian is aware of in his unique history and personal experience. He ENCOUNTERS Christ IN that experience and is CONFRONTED by the claims of Christ also in his black experience. But at the same time, the confrontation of the black Christian with the black Messiah, who is also the UNIVERSAL Christ, points him beyond the mere symbolism is rooted in his experience. In other words, the universal Christ is particularized for the black Christian in the black experience of the black messiah, but the black Messiah is at the same time universalized in the Christ of the Gospels who meets all men in their situation. The black messiah liberates the black man. The universal Christ RECONCILES the black man with the rest of mankind.” (Pg. 139-140)He concludes, “Blacks must not allow whites to salve their consciences through reparations. Too many whites are pleased to be rid of the black presence by funding some empowerment project in the black community. They are Christian colonizers who will use separatism to strengthen their racist program. Blacks in white churches must be ‘plagues on the houses’ of white racists who desire to be at ease in Zion while racial injustices continue. Our quest for a theological ethic must provide the ethical imperatives that will lead the church, black and white, to be the church---a liberating and reconciling church.” (Pg. 198)This book, though nearly fifty years old, remains of great interest to contemporary students of theology.

This book is terrible. I can't believe my class required it. Chapters are incredibly long and you flip between information that is very fluffed / not useful for the examples given to incredibly dense examples that take multiple re-reads to even begin to understand. Additionally, the thing is RIDDLED with typos that make doing work almost impossible. Multiple times in a chapter I will have the textbook reference something like "See figure 6.17a" only for figure 6.17a to not exist!A typo here and there or grammatical issues is one thing, but pointing students to non existent figures while requiring them to solve problems that need referencing of those figures is unforgivable. This is easily the worst textbook I've used in my university career.

I'm afraid I have to agree with most of the reviewers here: this book is horrible. Unfortunately, it's required for my class. In order to actually understand most of the subject matter, I have to constantly refer to other books, YouTube videos, Google searches, and homework help services. It seems the authors are trying to cram too much information into one book, with the result that they are covering all of the information very badly. My recommendation would be to cut down on the variety of information presented and cover fewer topics well.

Using this book for a graduate course. As other reviewers have stated its a really rough read and at times difficult to follow. Agree with others that this book needs to be better edited for content and clarity. Would not recommend as a reference book.

I personally liked this text.It is not perfect, and some sections should be more elaborated, but otherwise it is rather informative.Covers boolean algebra, logic gates, memory organization, and many other good things.It can't be read quickly. You will have to spend time to read carefully.Positive: for the most part questions for each chapter can be answered based on information in the book. In my life I have encountered text where there were NO way questions could be answered based solely on the info in the text. So, if you getting this text for class, it is good news.Negative: I feel that some sections could be elaborated more with further examples. For instance binary divisions and multiplications would be better with couple more examples.I feel like I didn't waste time reading it, so you too could learn something from it (unless of course you already know the subject well...).

This book is ok, but sometimes does not do a great job at more detailed explanations. It seems to really only be meant for introductions into the topics where when the student gets to class, the professor goes into more detail. Honestly after mid-terms I stopped reading it but it is a good reference and the MARIE language developed by the authors is really useful to introduce students to assembly type languages.

The chapters provide a general overview of ideas/topics but the questions at the end of the chapter are very detail intensive. Probably the second worst book I have ever come across in my entire life. Know that if the book is required, you will be using other sources to actually learn the material to do the homework. Good luck.

Thorough, well-written, highly technical textbook. Presented the detailed information I was looking for with a lot of helpful examples and diagrams. Really not sure why it's gotten such poor reviews here. Sure, some of the information is complicated and dry -- but that's the nature of the subject matter.

I would give it a five star if it's a book from Wikibooks. Lots of overly detailed facts, historical information, mediocre but acceptable formatting, and excessive citations - everything you would expect from a community sourced textbook.But this is a published textbook with a price tag of over 200 dollars. And only minutes into reading the book, I got terribly frustrated. Some of the problems the book has, which I've discovered after reading the first chapter, are as follows:1. The book uses very low quality images. On Page 9, there is even a picture taken from Wikipedia! Being printed in black and white, it is near impossible to see what's actually on the picture. (It is a photo of a motherboard with blurry annotations that you cannot read). And on Page 27, there is a picture that seemed taken by a cellphone camera. What's bothering me is that the book actually uses professional illustrations as well. Why do they allow low quality images to be used when they have access to professional artists, who could easily draw a much better illustration than a low resolution photo.2. The typography of this book is rather bad. If they could use a smaller font size that most college-level textbooks would use, the near 900-page book would probably be only half as thick. The formatting is so minimal that you will have no idea if you are reading a new section or just a sub-section. Important concepts are not highlighted properly, while random words are put in bold for no apparent reasons.3. It seems that whoever wrote the exercise questions did not read the book at all. Questions are irrelevant to what's covered in the chapter, and sometimes require you to Google the answer - the book just mentions nothing about what the question's asking.4. Also it seems that whoever wrote the answers for the exercise questions did not read the questions at all. The answer to exercise 8 in Chapter 1 seems just plain wrong.However, it is a solid book - it holds my coffee mug without deformation, even after hours of use.

Greek myths are tricky to depict in a fixed-frame visual format due to their multiple characters, intersecting storylines and extravagant backgrounds (Hades, Olympus.) Narrators/illustrators Amanda Brock, Monica Sweeney, and Becky Thomas do a credible job of writing concise yet interesting text boxes that accompany each frame. The problem with this work is that the pictorial narrative doesn’t pop. There’s a sameness to the detailed panels that give the 33 stories a ‘been there, done that’ feel.The repetitive visual tone may be due to the muted color palette of bricks used in the majority of the scenes – the trio uses lots of reds and browns, tans and greys, green and blacks, suggesting a limited LEGO collection of bricks, figures, and miscellany. Other production problems include panels where you can see the figures casting shadows (page 149, for example) suggesting that insufficient light was used to illuminate the scene for the greatest clarity and visual effect. Scene-after-scene features a top-down view. While allowing for a panoramic visual, the perspective got boring over time. Faulty printing also mars this enterprising work. There are vibrantly illustrated frames (the Daedalus and Icarus chapter, for instance), but most frames - especially the smaller ones – are dark and opaque suggesting a problem with the printer’s handling of the plates and ink on press. Finally, my copy split along the spine and pages even before I finished reading the entire book (see pix.)This is an ambitious work that shows lots of heart and focus. It’s also a mediocre one given the numerous artistic, production, and printing challenges. A boldly executed but pricey enterprise.

IMPORTANT TIP FOR PARENTS - this is NOT recommended for smaller kids - there is GRAPHIC VIOLENCE depicted in this book (in so far as you can do that with Legos).Understand what this book is/isn't.1) This book IS a book that shows the stories of some classic Greek myths using Lego's and to that end it does a really fine job. As an adult who is a fan of both Legos and Greek Myths I have enjoyed reading it2) This book is NOT intended for little kids (in my opinion). If you are familiar with Greek myths you'll know that many of the stories involve negative consequences like death and other 'adult' themes. This book does slightly water down these adult themes but not enough to make it appropriate for little kids. Its without a doubt a PG 13 book.3) This book IS a book that shows full color pics and great Lego builds4) This book is NOT a book for easy readers - the Greek names alone are a challenge and they will quickly frustrate early readers.Personally I DO like the book and am happy with it overall but I believe the maker should provide an "FYI to Parents" so they'll know in advance. Also, while the book is beautiful in terms of the pics and it's large size the quality of the binding is poor - our binding came apart after the first read and the pages are already falling out - which is a shame.

My sons are very into Greek Mythology (thanks to Percy Jackson) and legos, so they are obsessed with this book to the point that a couple months later it has all but fallen apart from love. They read the myths, learn new facts, and then rush off to recreate their own monsters and creatures. I wish the book were sturdier, but I don't think it's the fault of the book given the countless hours of use and love it has received from my 7 and 8 year old boys.

The stories are entertaining. Pictures and stories are pretty loyal to the myths we know and love. The book however, began to fall apart just weeks after I bought it, with moderate use and with great care. I can't imagine what would happen if someone were to handle it a great deal or not put it away properly. It is useless after 2 months.

Great idea: perhaps a little too graphic and true to the real Greek myths for children. I skip the dismemberment and try to introduce the kids to the general myth ideas without the gore.

My son loves anything that has to do with Greek mythology and we have approximately 17 tons of LEGO so match made in heaven.

Got this as a gift for my husband who is a huge fan of Lego and Greek mythology. It was a huge hit and he loved it.

A must for lego fans. We are now collecting these books for our lego collection.

GCC continues to evolve and add new flags. Last year it stepped up to C11 and added new optimizations. GCC has FORTRAN and Java compilation capabilities, who knew?. The book covers the best use of Autoconf and Automake with GCC. It also covers using a host of support libaries. There are two section in the Appendix covering the use of specific options.I found this book to be of immense value in giving me an instant expertise in the use of the GCC. I had a dual goal project that required the same code to work on both Linux and Windows. This book gave me the knowledge to make that possible in a relatively short time. My time is worth money, your time should be valuable to. Stop depending on dated website trivia and decade old Linux manuals. Step up to the real world and see what the future can do for you. It's covered in this book.

Actually, this book does cover the FORTRAN and Java aspects of GCC for a couple of chapters, but yes it is mostly for C/C++ programmers. Anyway, if you want to learn about all of GCC's different switches, optimization techniques, and warnings then this book has it all. It also covers the "helper" tools like gcov.

Informative, both basic and more advanced uses. However the plethora of tags that gcc takes can leave you with a headache if you don't know what your looking for. I had hoped there was a chapter on frontend/backend use, and how to build an interface to call GCC. Doesn't get into GAS or GDB at all.

If your looking for in depth knowledge of GCC the compiler this is the book. It covers multiple opperating systems and multiple versions of GCC. Starting with the history of GCC up to current versions of 4.x. A must read for any C or C++ even Objective-C developers (GCC compiles many more languages). Its a great reference to have in your war chest!

There are three ways to find a place to kayak;A) Ask a bud. He'll tell you about this place he went to one time. He can't remember exactly where it is. It was a kinda nice place though. You should totally try it. As soon as he can remember where it is.B) Go to maps.google.com and aim for the blue. I used to do this a lot in my younger days. I'd have the day off and my buds and I would go for a ride. We'd aim for the green and the blue. We were never sure where the trailheads were. We were never sure where the boat ramps were. We were never sure where the trails, the streams, and the lakes were going. But hell, we were 17 and skipping school. So it was a good day.C) Buy this guide book. You'll find places you never knew existed. You'll explore corners of the state that it seems like hardly a soul has ever seen. You can rarely go wrong in NH or VT. You'll have forest in front of you, mountains towering over you, and clear water flowing below you. Bring a life jacket, a lunch (include a beer), and a companion and you'll have a good day.The first time my wife and I decided to haul our kayaks up to NH, we went to Squam Lake. It's a big blotch of blue on the map. You can't miss it. It took a while of googling to find a public access, we had to pay for parking for that access, and we had no actual plan as to where we were going. We got out on the huge lake and the wind was blowing. The waves were hitting us hard. I never knew that a lake could have waves until a windy day on Squam. My wife was unable to avoid the waves and her kayak filled with water. She was miserable. I had to listen to her. I was miserable. It was a great place to bring a boat to waterski.....don't bring kayaks.We went home and bought this book. Since then we've picniced on islands cliffs overlooking the water. We've swam from our own private beaches. We've seen loon and otter (though sadly, still haven't bumped into a moose). The best part is that we still have most of a book left to explore. There are places in this book that I've read about that I'm dying to explore.If I had to nitpick a bit, there is one downside to the book. The authors take middle-of-nowhere to extreme. Personally I'm looking for some crystal clear water to swim in and picnic on the side of. They, on the other hand, love a body of water that is choked with lily pads and muck. Sometimes you need to read between the lines to be able to tell if the body of water is suitable for someone looking for a relaxing day in the sun or if it's just for folks who want to look at plants. I guess it's all just a matter of what you're looking for, but the book will give a description of the body of water so you always know if the place is what you're looking for.

I was looking for a book that would give me info on great places to paddle in the white mountains with my kids. This was a terrific guide and fit the bill exactly. It includes info about fees you may have to pay for parking, good directions, and the map was good. only criticism: One of the places we went to --Long Pond in Benton, NH--it would have been helpful to note that the road leading up to the boat launch is steep and unpaved, and there didn't seem to be any hiking trails despite that being indicated in the book.

So far this has been a great buy! I have an guide rowing boat and this book, and the ones from Maine and Massachusetts have been great. My only suggestion for future editions is to say in the Take a Note section whether or not these places are dog friendly. We went to Walden pond with the intention of rowing with our very small dog, only to find that dogs were not allowed. We had no difficulty finding a place to row in the same vicinity but it was a little disappointing.

It's just quick snapshots of places to paddle. No detailed descriptions. I like to know the size, length, and time to paddle, but what I also wanted this book to provide was information about places to take breaks, camp, swim, etc.

Good information including directions, what to see, and any problems for numerous locations in NH and VT.

Looks like it contains many good paddles but have not had a chance to do any yet.

This book has wonderful reviews of many, many spots to kayak and canoe in VT and NH. The directions to the various spots are usually right on. The places are sorted by which part of the state they're in. We've found this book very helpful when we want to find a spot for a quick paddle, or an all day adventure.

This is one of the finest book I have ever read on the history of the struggle of the Oromo women against the oppression of the empire and in their gendered society. This is a group which was kept in shadow for long time. For one thing, the Oromo history within the Ethiopian history is often characterized by neglect and misconception. The case of the Oromo women is exacerbated by the gender aspect of the issue. Therefore, she tried to bring to the attention, the story of a marginalized group within a marginalized people. In this connection, a sub title of the book speaks for itself, "The Forgotten Women in Ethiopian History." I would add that they are also the forgotten people in the Oromo discourses, be it modern or traditional.In my opinion, the book tries to deal with the history of the Oromo women from the viewpoint of the Oromo nationalism and Oromo identity, "Oromtitti." It provides rich accounts of the Oromo women's who resisted the incorporation into the Ethiopian Empire, and resisted the occupation. It talks about Oromo women sold into slavery, and how some of them had a lasting impact on their people. It does deal with role of the Oromo women in the current Oromo struggles for self-determination, albeit, in a piecemeal fashion. It does not deal with Oromo legends, which explains the gender roles among Oromo. Nor it deals with the ateetee and siiqee institutions. Nevertheless, the book makes significant contribution for the Oromo and Ethiopian studies. I recommend the book for any person who want to know about the Oromo women, the Oromo politics and history...Thank you Ballatach for wonderful work.
