Greek myths are tricky to depict in a fixed-frame visual format due to their multiple characters, intersecting storylines and extravagant backgrounds (Hades, Olympus.) Narrators/illustrators Amanda Brock, Monica Sweeney, and Becky Thomas do a credible job of writing concise yet interesting text boxes that accompany each frame. The problem with this work is that the pictorial narrative doesn’t pop. There’s a sameness to the detailed panels that give the 33 stories a ‘been there, done that’ feel.The repetitive visual tone may be due to the muted color palette of bricks used in the majority of the scenes – the trio uses lots of reds and browns, tans and greys, green and blacks, suggesting a limited LEGO collection of bricks, figures, and miscellany. Other production problems include panels where you can see the figures casting shadows (page 149, for example) suggesting that insufficient light was used to illuminate the scene for the greatest clarity and visual effect. Scene-after-scene features a top-down view. While allowing for a panoramic visual, the perspective got boring over time. Faulty printing also mars this enterprising work. There are vibrantly illustrated frames (the Daedalus and Icarus chapter, for instance), but most frames - especially the smaller ones – are dark and opaque suggesting a problem with the printer’s handling of the plates and ink on press. Finally, my copy split along the spine and pages even before I finished reading the entire book (see pix.)This is an ambitious work that shows lots of heart and focus. It’s also a mediocre one given the numerous artistic, production, and printing challenges. A boldly executed but pricey enterprise.

IMPORTANT TIP FOR PARENTS - this is NOT recommended for smaller kids - there is GRAPHIC VIOLENCE depicted in this book (in so far as you can do that with Legos).Understand what this book is/isn't.1) This book IS a book that shows the stories of some classic Greek myths using Lego's and to that end it does a really fine job. As an adult who is a fan of both Legos and Greek Myths I have enjoyed reading it2) This book is NOT intended for little kids (in my opinion). If you are familiar with Greek myths you'll know that many of the stories involve negative consequences like death and other 'adult' themes. This book does slightly water down these adult themes but not enough to make it appropriate for little kids. Its without a doubt a PG 13 book.3) This book IS a book that shows full color pics and great Lego builds4) This book is NOT a book for easy readers - the Greek names alone are a challenge and they will quickly frustrate early readers.Personally I DO like the book and am happy with it overall but I believe the maker should provide an "FYI to Parents" so they'll know in advance. Also, while the book is beautiful in terms of the pics and it's large size the quality of the binding is poor - our binding came apart after the first read and the pages are already falling out - which is a shame.

My sons are very into Greek Mythology (thanks to Percy Jackson) and legos, so they are obsessed with this book to the point that a couple months later it has all but fallen apart from love. They read the myths, learn new facts, and then rush off to recreate their own monsters and creatures. I wish the book were sturdier, but I don't think it's the fault of the book given the countless hours of use and love it has received from my 7 and 8 year old boys.

The stories are entertaining. Pictures and stories are pretty loyal to the myths we know and love. The book however, began to fall apart just weeks after I bought it, with moderate use and with great care. I can't imagine what would happen if someone were to handle it a great deal or not put it away properly. It is useless after 2 months.

Great idea: perhaps a little too graphic and true to the real Greek myths for children. I skip the dismemberment and try to introduce the kids to the general myth ideas without the gore.

My son loves anything that has to do with Greek mythology and we have approximately 17 tons of LEGO so match made in heaven.

Got this as a gift for my husband who is a huge fan of Lego and Greek mythology. It was a huge hit and he loved it.

A must for lego fans. We are now collecting these books for our lego collection.

GCC continues to evolve and add new flags. Last year it stepped up to C11 and added new optimizations. GCC has FORTRAN and Java compilation capabilities, who knew?. The book covers the best use of Autoconf and Automake with GCC. It also covers using a host of support libaries. There are two section in the Appendix covering the use of specific options.I found this book to be of immense value in giving me an instant expertise in the use of the GCC. I had a dual goal project that required the same code to work on both Linux and Windows. This book gave me the knowledge to make that possible in a relatively short time. My time is worth money, your time should be valuable to. Stop depending on dated website trivia and decade old Linux manuals. Step up to the real world and see what the future can do for you. It's covered in this book.

Actually, this book does cover the FORTRAN and Java aspects of GCC for a couple of chapters, but yes it is mostly for C/C++ programmers. Anyway, if you want to learn about all of GCC's different switches, optimization techniques, and warnings then this book has it all. It also covers the "helper" tools like gcov.

Informative, both basic and more advanced uses. However the plethora of tags that gcc takes can leave you with a headache if you don't know what your looking for. I had hoped there was a chapter on frontend/backend use, and how to build an interface to call GCC. Doesn't get into GAS or GDB at all.

If your looking for in depth knowledge of GCC the compiler this is the book. It covers multiple opperating systems and multiple versions of GCC. Starting with the history of GCC up to current versions of 4.x. A must read for any C or C++ even Objective-C developers (GCC compiles many more languages). Its a great reference to have in your war chest!

There are three ways to find a place to kayak;A) Ask a bud. He'll tell you about this place he went to one time. He can't remember exactly where it is. It was a kinda nice place though. You should totally try it. As soon as he can remember where it is.B) Go to maps.google.com and aim for the blue. I used to do this a lot in my younger days. I'd have the day off and my buds and I would go for a ride. We'd aim for the green and the blue. We were never sure where the trailheads were. We were never sure where the boat ramps were. We were never sure where the trails, the streams, and the lakes were going. But hell, we were 17 and skipping school. So it was a good day.C) Buy this guide book. You'll find places you never knew existed. You'll explore corners of the state that it seems like hardly a soul has ever seen. You can rarely go wrong in NH or VT. You'll have forest in front of you, mountains towering over you, and clear water flowing below you. Bring a life jacket, a lunch (include a beer), and a companion and you'll have a good day.The first time my wife and I decided to haul our kayaks up to NH, we went to Squam Lake. It's a big blotch of blue on the map. You can't miss it. It took a while of googling to find a public access, we had to pay for parking for that access, and we had no actual plan as to where we were going. We got out on the huge lake and the wind was blowing. The waves were hitting us hard. I never knew that a lake could have waves until a windy day on Squam. My wife was unable to avoid the waves and her kayak filled with water. She was miserable. I had to listen to her. I was miserable. It was a great place to bring a boat to waterski.....don't bring kayaks.We went home and bought this book. Since then we've picniced on islands cliffs overlooking the water. We've swam from our own private beaches. We've seen loon and otter (though sadly, still haven't bumped into a moose). The best part is that we still have most of a book left to explore. There are places in this book that I've read about that I'm dying to explore.If I had to nitpick a bit, there is one downside to the book. The authors take middle-of-nowhere to extreme. Personally I'm looking for some crystal clear water to swim in and picnic on the side of. They, on the other hand, love a body of water that is choked with lily pads and muck. Sometimes you need to read between the lines to be able to tell if the body of water is suitable for someone looking for a relaxing day in the sun or if it's just for folks who want to look at plants. I guess it's all just a matter of what you're looking for, but the book will give a description of the body of water so you always know if the place is what you're looking for.

I was looking for a book that would give me info on great places to paddle in the white mountains with my kids. This was a terrific guide and fit the bill exactly. It includes info about fees you may have to pay for parking, good directions, and the map was good. only criticism: One of the places we went to --Long Pond in Benton, NH--it would have been helpful to note that the road leading up to the boat launch is steep and unpaved, and there didn't seem to be any hiking trails despite that being indicated in the book.

So far this has been a great buy! I have an guide rowing boat and this book, and the ones from Maine and Massachusetts have been great. My only suggestion for future editions is to say in the Take a Note section whether or not these places are dog friendly. We went to Walden pond with the intention of rowing with our very small dog, only to find that dogs were not allowed. We had no difficulty finding a place to row in the same vicinity but it was a little disappointing.

It's just quick snapshots of places to paddle. No detailed descriptions. I like to know the size, length, and time to paddle, but what I also wanted this book to provide was information about places to take breaks, camp, swim, etc.

Good information including directions, what to see, and any problems for numerous locations in NH and VT.

Looks like it contains many good paddles but have not had a chance to do any yet.

Just started kayaking...the book is great!!

This book has wonderful reviews of many, many spots to kayak and canoe in VT and NH. The directions to the various spots are usually right on. The places are sorted by which part of the state they're in. We've found this book very helpful when we want to find a spot for a quick paddle, or an all day adventure.

This is one of the finest book I have ever read on the history of the struggle of the Oromo women against the oppression of the empire and in their gendered society. This is a group which was kept in shadow for long time. For one thing, the Oromo history within the Ethiopian history is often characterized by neglect and misconception. The case of the Oromo women is exacerbated by the gender aspect of the issue. Therefore, she tried to bring to the attention, the story of a marginalized group within a marginalized people. In this connection, a sub title of the book speaks for itself, "The Forgotten Women in Ethiopian History." I would add that they are also the forgotten people in the Oromo discourses, be it modern or traditional.In my opinion, the book tries to deal with the history of the Oromo women from the viewpoint of the Oromo nationalism and Oromo identity, "Oromtitti." It provides rich accounts of the Oromo women's who resisted the incorporation into the Ethiopian Empire, and resisted the occupation. It talks about Oromo women sold into slavery, and how some of them had a lasting impact on their people. It does deal with role of the Oromo women in the current Oromo struggles for self-determination, albeit, in a piecemeal fashion. It does not deal with Oromo legends, which explains the gender roles among Oromo. Nor it deals with the ateetee and siiqee institutions. Nevertheless, the book makes significant contribution for the Oromo and Ethiopian studies. I recommend the book for any person who want to know about the Oromo women, the Oromo politics and history...Thank you Ballatach for wonderful work.

I have been interested in learning how to count cards for decades. I've picked up a number of books over that time that told me that card counting was 1) simple, 2) easy, and 3) something an average person could learn with a weekend or so of practice.However I realized that if those statements were true, the casinos would either have to stop playing blackjack, or go bankrupt.Since neither one of those things were happening, it became pretty obvious to me that card counting was NOT 1) simple, 2) NOT easy, and 3) NOT something an average person could learn with a weekend or so of practice. Instead it seemed that the books that claimed it was easy only served to give people a sense of false confidence, because blackjack became more popular and the casinos sure weren't having a problem paying their electric bills.So, I decided that I didn't want to use those books to learn how to count cards.For reasons not related to this review I recently regained my interest in card counting. I didn't want to waste my money on a book that would simply set me up to be cannon fodder for the casino, so I did some research and decided to purchase BLACKJACK ATTACK.This is NOT a book to teach you basic card counting. This is NOT a book that will teach you a simple system. This is NOT a beginners book.As such it is going to be a while before I will be able to use it, or to be honest, even understand all of it.This is a book that works with serious mathematics. It is NOT for everybody.Which is EXACTLY why it is the best book in the field, and one that I am very, very happy I purchased.

I was stunned when I read some of the negative reviews. It was apparent that some of those individuals were looking for a "winning system." This book doesn't provide you with some magical counting system. Rather, the author discusses the nuances of card counting. Don't expect to learn "which system is best." You won't. (Different methods play better with different rule variations.) But, you will learn how to think about the game. I used a counting method before I read this book. I still use the same one. But my approach to the game has changed. For example, at one time I dismissed the importance of deck penetration. No longer. Also, I didn't think that the dealer standing on soft 17 would make that much difference over hitting on soft 17. Wrong. So, although I use the same counting method, my game selection has changed considerably. I didn't learn to count because of this book. But I AM a better player because of this book. And that's because of how I now select my games, not because this book supplied some magical counting system.

The OBG Classics edition published September 11, 2017, claims to be "the new translation." But IF it is somehow new -- and, by the way, no translator is identified -- what exactly has been translated? What is new about it? It is still written in the difficult-to-understand Middle English Chaucer used, and apart from spelling (or misspelling?) "his" as "hise" in line-1 [see NOTE at end] and throwing in some extra commas, this is pretty much the standard version. It is handsomely formatted and has an active TOC, but no introduction, no clarifications of archaic words, nothing but the seemingly original Middle English text. Calling itself "the new translation" strongly suggests this has been translated into easier-to-understand Modern English, but such is not the case here. Chaucer certainly rates 5-stars, but I have deducted one for the misrepresentation.FYI: An excellent Modern English version will be found in the Kindle Store for $.99 by A. S. Kline.NOTE: The first line normally reads: "Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote...." The words "shoures" and "soote" are each two syllables in Middle English pronunciation; thus the entire line rightly has the number of accented syllables Chaucer intended. If "his" (a one-syllable word) were improperly changed to "hise" (turning it into a two-syllable word, pronounced his-uh) -- as is done here -- that adds an unintended and, therefore, unacceptable extra syllable. I have to assume this is merely a typo; but how many other such errors are contained herein?

If you are going to read The Canterbury Tales, this is the way to go. The Middle-English may seem intimidating at first, but it is easier than one might think to sound out and understand. Of course, the annotation helps quite a bit too. These tales and their frame perfectly capture medieval life with it's lively characters and various settings. Ranging from poetic diversions, to dramatic, to adventures, all the the way to gruesome fables, and plenty of very funny (and memorable) bawdy humor. This earthy group of classic stories has something for everyone. The modern translation is also worth having as a companion, but this fine paperback is the one for authenticity.

Let's get this clear at the start: This is a review of Jill Mann's edition of the Canterbury Tales in its Kindle version. (It's a shame that Amazon can't distinguish between different editions of the classics when posting reviews! -- hint!) About the Tales themselves, I'll say only that they are both a classic and a blast, and if you can handle the Middle English, you have to read them in that language. Jill Mann's editorial work is smart and thorough, too. The print edition is a bargain at the price -- again, if you're OK reading Middle English. The Kindle edition, though was a little clumsy to use -- though, to be fair, I don't see how all the glosses and notes could have been presented better in a e-book. Wait, yes I can. The glosses on individual words and expressions are easy to find; the more extensive notes, which are very valuable, are not. It shouldn't have been hard to add a marginal symbol to reference a Note. Hence it's only four stars, not five. But it may well be the best e-book version on the market.

Here is a brief synopsis.At the Tabard Inn, a tavern in Southwark, near London, the narrator joins a company of twenty-nine pilgrims. The pilgrims, like the narrator, are traveling to the shrine of the martyr Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury. The narrator gives a descriptive account of twenty-seven of these pilgrims, including a Knight, Squire, Yeoman, Prioress, Monk, Friar, Merchant, Clerk, Man of Law, Franklin, Haberdasher, Carpenter, Weaver, Dyer, Tapestry-Weaver, Cook, Shipman, Physician, Wife, Parson, Plowman, Miller, Manciple, Reeve, Summoner, Pardoner, and Host. (He does not describe the Second Nun or the Nun’s Priest, although both characters appear later in the book.) The Host, whose name, we find out in the Prologue to the Cook’s Tale, is Harry Bailey, suggests that the group ride together and entertain one another with stories. He decides that each pilgrim will tell two stories on the way to Canterbury and two on the way back. Whomever he judges to be the best storyteller will receive a meal at Bailey’s tavern, courtesy of the other pilgrims.I won't go into detail about all the tales that are told except to say that I found them witty, entertaining, and thoughtful.
