From his early years as the son of a widow abandoned by her clan, he showed remarkable ability as a charismatic leader and unifier. In 25 years, his army amassed a greater empire than the Romans had been able to achieve in 400. Whether judged on population or land area, it was twice as large as that of any other individual in history. This colorful retelling discusses many of the innovations that marked Khan's rule and contributed to his success. Although his name is now erroneously associated with terror and slaughter, he showed surprising restraint during a time when few others in power did. He allowed freedom of religion, encouraged free trade, developed a paper currency, and observed diplomatic immunity. As he encountered new cultures, he adopted or adapted their best practices, and constantly updated his military strategies. Although Khan's death occurs at the midpoint of this book, the tales of his survivors' exploits and the gradual fall of the Mongol dynasties are engaging and informative. This is a well written, nicely flowing work. The author, Jack Weatherford, traces the life and time of Genghis Khan, born as Temujin, and his descendants. He notes the impact of the plague on the Mongols and how that plague spread, to some extent by the Mongols. And he makes the claim that the Mongols had an appreciable impact on the West's Renaissance.Weatherford begins by noting the purpose of his book (Page xxxv): "The focus remains on the mission of our work: to understand Genghis Khan and his impact on world history." The book is in three parts: first, Genghis Khan's rise to power and the development of the Mongol Empire; second, the period when the Mongols became a major world player, until the empire began devouring itself with internecine warfare; third, the effect of the Mongols on the development of modern society. There is a useful genealogy at the start of the book; however, the book would have benefited greatly with an ample supply of maps, so that the reader could trace developments geographically.The book does a terrific job of describing Khan's background--from his youth until he began developing a powerhouse, to his death. His military forces used innovative tactics that baffled his opponents, adapting Mongol warriors' mobility to advantage. The Mongols expanded their sway until--at its greatest point, it was larger than the Roman Empire at its height. It stretched, in 1260, from China to Moscow and Kiev, and to the doorsteps of Vienna, from Baghdad to Samarkand.Weatherford goes on to discuss the Empire after Genghis Khan's death. It continued to function until the combat among his sons led to more and more internal troubles. This depiction of internal problems, again, is well done.It amazes me how detailed is the discussion of people and events from so long ago.However, when he comes to argue that the Mongol Empire sparked the Renaissance and later European history, It appears to me that his grasp exceeds his reach. I am not certain that quoting Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales" with references to Genghis Khan (as part of his argument) is compelling. Nonetheless, while I did not find his case so convincing, it did cause me to reflect on important historical issues, and that--in itself--is a contribution.In short, a well done book on the Mongol Empire and its founder. Worth taking a look at. . . .

I was very excited for this book and the ambitiousness of its scope, but found myself underwhelmed. It's entertaining and educational, I found myself wanting more in multiple respects. More details, more evidence, more expansive coverage.The book can't quite seem to decide what it wants to be. Is it a thesis of how the Mongol empire provided foundational technologies and practices of the modern age? Is it a biography of Genghis Khan? Is it a history of the Mongol empire? It turns out to be a haphazard mix of all three, with major shortcomings on all fronts.As a broader anthropological thesis about the impact of Genghis Khan, Weatherford makes a very compelling case that the Mongol empire contained some then-innovative ASPECTS of modern ideals (e.g. religious tolerance, meritocracy, globalization of commerce, public schooling, paper currency, among others). He convincingly argues that the Mongols spread good ideas from one region of the empire to another, and combined those ideas in novel ways. He doesn't do a very good job of arguing that these innovations formed the basis of the modernity, spread into the broader world, and continued into today. Much of his focus is also on developments after the death of Genghis, particularly on Kubalai. While this makes sense from a historical narrative perspective, it's harder to tie the achievements of Kubalai back to Genghis, when the former took power 33 years after the latter's death, following the reign of three other Great Khans. Weatherford also mostly ignores developments in the other Khan lineages upon Kubalai taking the (disputed) title of Great Khan. He makes some ambitious and expansive claims, but doesn't provide compelling evidence. A few that caught my eyes are that Mongol culture was a foundational precursor to the European Renaissance or that the Nazi's blitzkrieg strategy was based on the study of Mongolian battle tactics. He could well be right, but I wasn't convinced of his conclusions on the basis of the evidence he presented.As a biography, I didn't get much of a feel for Genghis Khan man outside of his tactical brilliance and shrewdness for exploiting public sentiment. I felt I had a much better sense of the character of Ogodei and Kubalai Khan than Genghis himself. Granted, much of that is probably due to lack of good contemporaneous primary sources due to historical reasons, and Weatherford seems to feel that the main source of truth is The Secret History of the Mongols, a history written either late in Temujin's life or shortly after his death. But much of the Secret History seems like after the fact mythmaking, such as when it claims that Temujin was born with a blood clot in his fist, portending great leadership. Broadly there's a lot of projection and conjecture about how he must have felt and thought. For example Weatherford sometimes posits that perhaps Khan was just trying to protect his family, his tribe, and his way of life, rather than conquer the known world. I don't know. Given the lack of good primary sources, I'd rather he leaned more on secondary sources with the necessary qualifications, or kept it more concise and stuck to the facts. As is, the biographical portions awkwardly straddles the line between idle conjecture and dry "and then this happened".Finally as far as the broader Mongol empire is concerned, the focus is surprisingly narrow and cursory on the broader conquest. It has a pretty good discussion of broader strategy, tactics, and specific applications, but Weatherford mostly focuses on a couple campaigns (European campaigns of Ogodei Khan, Kubalai's campaigns into Sung China, and Genghis' campaigns in Mongolia, against the Jurched, and against the Khwarizm). Meanwhile he'll casually drop "And by this point the Mongols had dominion over Korea" without explaining how the Mongols adapted their steppe calvary tactics to the mountains and monsoons of Korea, while claiming the Mongols were stopped cold going out of their steppe comfort zone into the tropics of southern India or the forests of Western Europe. He sets up an epic conflict in Egypt an army of with former slav slaves, but kind of cursorily refers to it while suddenly jumping 20 years in to the future before jumping back. And as stated above, he has a pretty heavy focus on Kubalai, only briefly touching on the Ilkhanate in Persia and the Golden Horde in Eastern Europe.In all, I enjoyed the book and I'm not swayed by other criticism I've seen about whitewashing the character of a despot. I appreciate Weatherford trying to bring more nuance to a much caricatured man and culture. But couldn't help but think that the book is less than the sum of its parts, and could have been much more.

Totally changed my perception of geopolitics-really! This book, thoroughly researched, blasts the myths surrounding Ghenghis Khan and demonstrates his wisdom and courage as a leader. Perhaps more importantly, it contributes invaluable knowledge about the role of the Mongols in reshaping the world to forge trade routes, developing societies where many religions coexisted peacefully and exploding many of our prior myths about the savagery of the Mongol Horde. One of the most fascinating books on history I have read.

A well written and well read (in terms of the audio version) book on the Mongol Empire romthe time of Genghis Khan through the reign of Kubulai Khan. This book gives great detail into the early life of Tenmugen and the struggles and realities of living during a tumultuous period. The book isnt without its faults however, the author seems to go to great lengths to portray Genghis and the Mongols as bringers of peace and welfare. At one point he even goes so far as to suggest that a four year gap in the documentation of public executions must suggest that the Mongols did not execute. It seems like a rash assumption considering that the amount of death that followed the Mongol hoard would make Hitler jealous. All together it is an interesting read but please be aware that it comes through a very pro Mongol lens.

Very interesting and to me quite unknown history of Genghis and Kubilai Khan. The connection between Kubilai Khan and the Forbidden city as well as the connection between the Mongols and the Indian Moghuls were such a surprise. The origins of certain terms like 'horde' or 'hurray' were so interesting!The progressiveness of some of the Mongol ideas in the 13 th century were totally unexpexted.An amazing experience and a very well written history.

Be advised that the paperback edition contains Black & White images. This would be okay, if it was mentioned in the book description. I ordered a new copy from Amazon. What I received resembles a copy of a copy. The images are low quality. I will be returning it for the hardback.

This has been for many years, THE book to have. Alas, it is not entirely up-to-date, which one would naturally expect since the author is deceased. We do need a 21st century, comprehensive study of rare, semi-tropical, tropical fruit plants and trees. There is certainly a market for it out there. But in the meantime, this is a must read for serious growers/collectors of less-common fruit.

If you like tropical fruit, this is the book to have. You may read online at Purdue.edu but I've wanted a hard copy for years. It's great to find this classic in print for an affordable price.

This is a great book full of information on growing various tropical and subtropical fruits. While it is available free online, I enjoy being able to thumb through the pages.

This softcover edition of the 1990 hardcover NEO-CLASSICISM IN THE NORTH is currently the best source for information on 18th and 19th century Swedish furniture and interiors. I have both editions, the softcover being the travel reference, and they are the same except for the binding. See my review for the hardcover edition. A MUST HAVE for all interested in Baltic neoclassicism.

A rich variety of houses, some grander than the others, but all well-to-do peoples dwellings. Some of the manors featured aren't very well known even in Sweden, but they certainly deserve their place here. The few I do miss are featured in "The Swedish Room" e.i. Lay-out-wise it is by now perhaps a little dated, but the auther knows his subject very well and the accompaning photos are mostly marvellous. When a Swede writes on Swedish interiors the result is accurate as this book shows.

This is another great book for Swedish decorative detail .A great asset in the decorative artist`s Library.A good source for Bolander`s beautiful wall murals. Great photography with excellent detail shots .A beautiful and knowledgable book. I am a decorative artist specializing in custom painted furniture for decorators and designers and have found this book to be a great resource and very helpful in my work.

Loved it. This is a book for anyone that is a fan of the CKY Crew as Novak has always been connected to them over the years in their various hijinks or a person who has had the unfortunate luck to be involved with a drug addiction or knows someone who has been. It really sheds light on the tragedies an addict faces and what kind of hurdles they attempt to overcome to beat their sin. Novak's history is also detailed very much so if you've ever been more curious about the man who is usually Bam's punching bag you will enjoy the insight into his earlier years. I personally know a friend who is a recovering drug addict right now and this was a book they had at his halfway house which was brought up to me one day when I visited him. He didn't even know who Novak was or his history with the CKY Crew but told me he really found the book to be a help as well as a embarrassing mirror that shed reflection on his own former drug life.

Amazing story and an honest look at the life of a junkie. This is the only book I have finished without skipping pages or putting it down. This book is an easy read and only took two evenings in bed to finish. I couldn't put it down it was just gripping and I wanted to know more and more about Brandon's journey. As someone with a severe disease that takes heavy prescription pills every day I live in constant fear of ending up like Brandon and his story is an important piece to keep those of us who need these drugs to survive. Highlights of this story are the story of Brandon and his new friend in the blue Mercedes, Dane and Guy Leeper, the sometimes abusive but well-meaning relationship with Bam Margera, the amazing story of the Margera's and Mrs. Novak, and walking the streets desperate for a fix only to get drywall. I can't wait to read this again to read it from a different aspect. I found myself sitting outside, with a cigar, enjoying the warm Texas late night air with this book in my hand. Brandon, I wish you luck. I know you will slip and fall many times in your life but the important thing is that you beat this disease and you take care of yourself.

This book was incredible. I've been a Jackass fan my entire life. My cousin introduced me to CKY when I was 10 or 11 and we grew up together watching CKY and Jackass. Recently he passed away from an overdose. I was distraught, angry, and confused. The second I got Dreamseller I could not put it down. I actually read it in one day. It helped me a lot with my grief. Also just to be able to get a glance into their personal life was great. I cannot wait for the sequel! I love to hear some crazy Novak stories. That dude is something else...

I actually met Brandon a couple of weeks ago when I did a podcast with him & a rapper/motivational speaker/recovery bad ass named Sirah. I knew Sai, that's how I ended up getting involved, but I had no idea who Brandon was until a few hours into meeting him. I never watched Jackass & I was never into skateboarding so to me, he was just another guy, but our conversations were incredible. He is so authentic & down to earth that it was so refreshing to talk to him. When I found out who he was & that he had a book, I knew I needed to know more about him. This book is a really great, no sugar coating, view of addiction. He shares parts of his story that aren't pretty & yet they're the thing that people need to see. This is what recovery looks like & the passion that Brandon has for recovery & sharing that to help others is inspiring. I look forward to seeing what he & Sirah will do with this podcast series & to share this book with others in my circle. I highly recommend it.

This is one of my favorite books. I have a cousin who has struggled with heroine addiction on and off the the better part of 6 years. Reading this has helped me understand the mind of an addict a little better and I'm really grateful for that.And then there's the fact that its Novak.... He's always had the gift of gab, and can tell the best stories. I really can't wait to read his new book soon.

I must say that being a part of addiction awareness causes, being the mother of a recovering addict and wanting to see it from another perspective, this book opened my eyes. I couldn't put this book down and was done it basically in two days. I commend Brandon Novak for his bluntness, his truth, his honesty and to be able to open my eyes from the other side-I applaud you 100%. You made me see things from your eyes, you also expressed how you realized what it did to your own family, I have torn myself apart for years thinking it was my fault, but knew deep down it wasn't, that I'm not wrong for still wanting to be there and support my own. Thank you for the frankness, opening up the way you did and allowing me to understand better. God bless you

this book has surprises at every corner and it kept me at the edge of my seat. this book it heart warming and I loved it. it shows drug abuse from a junkies eyes. it's a really good book and a real page Turner. it also has bits of moral showing you that being in the grip of a true monster can be a nightmare.

If there is only ONE book you read this year this should BE IT. No I am not pimping out the book because of monetary gain etc al. Brandon Novak is a regular guy, a son, a friend a person... and his book is not sugar coated or full of governmental propaganda etc. It is a TRUE diary, journal, walk in my shoes BOOK!! Joe Frantz and him created a no holds real true and some times difficult to read account of ONE young mans journey into the life or lack their of dealing with Heroin Addiction...

I LOVE this book. It's filled with a lot of great information about skin and how to properly care for it. I've had acne for over 30 years and it is now under control. I followed several of her recommendations (topical probiotics and Evening Primrose Oil). I've started using Probiotics on my face and what a difference. Normally when I get a facial I have quite a few extractions (blemishes that need to be cleaned out). After using probiotics on my face for a few weeks, I only had one small blemish at my last facial. My aesthetician and I were talking about how much better my skin is and how great probiotics are both internally and externally.

The GMA interview was enticing so I ordered the book, it is an eye opener and I am rating 4 stars because at times is repetitive so I was skipping pages to get to the next chapters. Overall interesting confirmation of why so many people have issues and how you can avoid skin problems.

I have been anticipating this book for quite some time; Dr Bowe is easily the best qualified physician in North America to tackle the subject of healthy skin. A practicing dermatologist and research-publishing scientist, Dr Bowe translates complex topics and illuminates them in east-to-understand ways. The real-life cases from her clinical practice make it easy to see how diet, stress, lifestyle etc manifest in skin health (or disease). Given the title, there is extensive discussion of the emerging microbiome science and the ways in which microbes can mediate skin health. Refreshingly, this science isn't oversold in the book. There are plenty of practical solutions but Dr Bowe knows full well how complicated skin conditions can be, and each person's environment, genetics, resources and lifestyle might manifest in the skin in different ways. So, it's a good balance of research-based information, hope for future microbiome-based solutions, and steps to take in the here-and-now.Beautifully written by a pioneer who dismantled the dogma which stated there was NO relationship between diet and acne. There are still lots of research questions on that score, and Dr Bowe refrains from overselling any dietary "cures" for acne (and other common skin diseases), but there is plenty of practical information in the book. The book has something for everyone, whether general reader or healthcare providers.

I'm so glad I bough this book. As someone who takes pride in their skin this book shed so much light into a lot of my skin issues. In fact, I stopped drinking cow's milk and was shocked at how quickly just that improved the quality of my skin. I'm actually in the processing of tweaking my diet to support my gut and anticipating to see even more improvement.

While this may not be the best written book nor does it have everything I might have wanted I have to say Dr. Bowe deserves a ton of credit for going against the medial establishment and getting to the truth ... your diet impacts your skin unquestionably. Her protocol and suggestions worked to improve my Rosacea for sure. Anyone suffering from Rosacea could benefit from this book.

I've only had time to implement the dietary changes so far, but I was amazed how fast I was able to detox from sugar and carbs. Feeling great and lost weight!

I've been desperately trying to solve my adult acne problem, so I got excited about the book when I saw Whitney Bowe promoting it on TV. It took me too long to get through because it reads like a textbook, and now I can't remember everything (also because it reads like a textbook). There are NO recommendations of products in the book. She just refers you to her website drwhitneybowe.com for everything she recommends. It is pretty fascinating what she talks about, but after reading the whole book I'm still kinda lost on how to fix my acne. I wish I would have skipped the book and gone straight to her website. She does provide you with a plan though. I'm excited to try it but am still skeptical about whether or not it will actually eliminate my acne. We will see.

This book is not only helpful, but it is refreshing from what I expected. A lot of times skincare advice (or advice on anything for that matter) is generic and general. Dr. Bowe explains the science behind the skin, and recommends solutions with specific products and examples she reccomends.It is certainly helpful hat she reccomends specific products, particularly that these products are reasonably priced and have clinical research to support their claims of efficacy.I have watched the author on Good Morning America and she always does a phenomenal job educating and reccom being solutions— this book is no different.

Great revised Catechism of the Catholic Church. Should be on the shelf of every Catholic!!!

Essential work if you want to understand what the Catholic church actually teaches. This book contains the necessary (imho) information for anyone who wants/needs to learn what Catholicism is all actually about. This book is divided into 4 (four) parts: profession of faith (creed), sacraments (7), life in faith, and prayer. Starting with a total explanation of the profession of faith (creed) and ends with the Lord's Prayer. Before reading this I had so many misconceptions about the Catholic church. While reading this the misconceptions disappear while the truth and beauty of the Catholic church appear.

Every Catholic who is a practicing Catholic should have one of these. And if youare not a practicing Catholic you might want to get this and ponder the book andsee if it can maybe change your life. We are talking about your soul and yourfamily's souls.....is there anything more important than that?Good luck and God Bless

The complete teachings, beliefs, and doctrines of the catholic church all in one book. The OED defines “catechism” as “An elementary treatise for instruction in the principles of the Christian religion, in the form of question and answer; such a book accepted and issued by a church as an authoritative exposition of its teaching….” This is a useful definition for understanding what kind of information can be found in the catechism.The Catechism of the Catholic Church was approved by Pope John Paul II in 1992. Obviously, the information contained in it was not new—it is based on the Bible, documents from church councils, encyclicals, previous versions of the catechism, and other Church documents that predate it by hundreds of years.The Catechism is meant to be used as a reference work. It’s organized clearly with an extensive table of contents and a glossary. I wouldn’t recommend trying to read it from cover to cover, though you certainly can if you’re of such a mind to do so.The Catechism is easy to find. It’s available for free on the Vatican website, though since I hate reading on the computer, I don’t find it more beneficial for anything save the search function. Printed copies are easily available used, new, paperback, hardcover, trade paperback, mass market paperback, e-reader, and any form you could want. As long as it says “Catechism of the Catholic Church,” it’s the right book. Be aware that theUnited States Catholic Catechism for Adults is a study supplement and does not contain the full text of the Catechism.

The Catechism is a remarkable, wonderful book. That said, if you are reading the Kindle edition cover to cover or want to look up any general chapter or topic in the table of contents, it works. However, the Catechism was specifically made to study. Each paragraph is numbered and this organization is used as a tool for finding specific teachings within larger topics very quickly. There is no way to do this in this edition--it is worthless for using to find specific citations referenced in other books. I hoped to use it as such to always have with me in a very manageable, lightweight, non-bulky format. It completely failed.

This is an excellent ten dollar investment for any Catholic, but especially for me as a theology major! The best single source on Catholic doctrine right on my Kindle. Now I don't have to lug around the large, hardcover first edition my dad bought me in high school. Not a good idea when you're dealing with Steubenville hills :) Also one of the best formated ebooks I've seen so far in my couple months as a kindle user. The cross referencing is linked (and there is a ton of cross referencing in there!) Whoever put this together for kindle really put the work into it and, for this book at least, I'm not complaining that it costs more than a paperback copy. Be careful though because the other version of the catechism on the kindle store, with the skinny white cover, put out by the "US Catholic Church" (last I checked the official name for that is the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, so that doesn't seem legit to me...), is formatted horribly and I am very glad I sampled both and compared before purchasing!

I ordered two of these - one for my husband and one for me. We were both terribly disappointed when the glue holding the binding in place broke open the very first time we opened the book. I'm going to try ordering a different paperback version. Perhaps that will have a more satisfactory binding and we'll be able to use the Catechism for many years. This is why I gave this product a two star review.

A must read for the Catholic and the non Catholic. Reading the book will help the Catholic explain the faith and help the cradle Catholic understand it like never before. For non Catholics it will answer all questions about what Catholics believe and why they do the things they do. I have read it through twice and have significantly improved my understanding of the Catholic faith. It is not the Bible but it is certainly Bible based and referenced with God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit at the very center of it all.

It reveals the answers to the questions that lead Christians and Catholics to fall astray or abandon their faith for other religious or spiritual beliefs.
