This is an extremely practical guide. I love that it not only guides you through instructional design, but also gives great suggestions for activities that can be adapted to most classrooms and most ages.

For a textbook, it is not bad.

Wonderful ideas, explanations, and a great resource. This is a good book to have when choosing those "great choices" to have in the library.

The text presents research based ideas, but it is very targeted toward a more traditional classroom and does not address asynchronous, self-paced learning experiences.

OK, so I already own three other books on Polymer Clay. Did this book have information not contained in my other three books? Was this book's new information of sufficient quantity that I couldn't just memorize the new techniques and not spend the money?Billed on the back cover as the "ultimate polymer clay book," every page holds the same promise. This book demonstrates the absolute versatility of the polymer clay medium.Donna's organization of polymer clay techniques makes perfect sense. She starts with the basics, then explains canes and loaves, followed by a host of surface treatments. Mould-making is next, then there are Tory Hughes's imitative techniques for bone, stone, and coral. Donna gives liberal credit to Tory. Next, Donna hits on sculptural techniques in three chapters: vessels, floral forms, and figurines.Vernon Ezell's photographs are colorful and sharp, enhancing Donna's instructive text. You may have seen an article or two by Donna in Jewelry Crafts or Lapidary Journal magazines. This book contains all of her ideas from those articles and lots more.I pondered for four days whether I should spend the money for this book. I bought it. You should too if you already work with polymer clay or are considering whether you should start. It's a real inspiration!

Excellent step-by-step instructions with photos. Explained everything I'd been trying to figure out through reading other guides, and provided a lot of great tips that Donna has developed through many years of working with polymer clay. I eventually picked up some of the tools that she designed that no one else seems to offer (the Marxit is ingenious, if you plan on making beads or anything requiring some uniformity in sizing). Check out her website, as well - lots of tips and tools there, as well.

I got this book because it was suggested as THE reference book for polymer clay and I see why they say that. It covers the basics from terminology and where to start, what to expect from different brands of polyclay, and tools of the trade. There are more advanced tools and techniques described but I wish there was more step by step instructions and pictures. Plus the style of Kato's work isn't my personal preference so I only got limited inspiration from her works.

Good book for learning different techniques. I was particularly interested in the pottery section as I have made ceramic pottery, and now am learning how to do it in polymer clay. Love her books. Trying to get them all for my library. Definitely a nice book.

Let me be upfront right at the start: Donna is a friend of mine; I worked for her when she owned a bead store here in Chicago, and at the time when she first began to work with poly clay. I've edited her project pamphlets, and I know her work very well, and have always thought that it was some of the best clay work I've ever seen.This book is a compendium of so many techniques that it's difficult to know where to start. It's not a project-based book, so if you're looking for something to follow by the numbers, look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a lot of good, sound instruction on clay techniques, this is the book for you. Bring your own ideas and let Donna help you make them reality.I can vouch for the fact that she knows her stuff; I saw her creating many of these objects, teaching herself the strengths and weaknesses of polymer clay and learning how to push the boundaries of what could be done in the medium. She has the chops, and she's sharing them. Learn from her! You won't regret investing in this book.

This book,in my opinion, is one of Donna's best. It has all the basics for beginners without the unnecessary "this is clay" boredom. After what I believe to be HONEST reviews of the top clays on the market today, she has READABLE instructions for many techniques. And if that is not enough, her projects are user /reader friendly. Her projects are nice, not like so many books with their "way out" ideas. If you are a beginner...This is the book to get you started. If you are intermediate, this is the book with new & fun lessons. If you are advanced, this is a good reference book and teaching manual. This is now my #1 reference book. Life is too short not to have fun!

Great ideas and ways to get one started in Polymer Clay; however, I ordered it at the same time as the newer volume and felt this version was not as useful. Why? Only because of the more up-to-date information on tools and clay varieties. So purchase the newest volume if you want to keep up with the latest, particularly tools, like me!I am giving my mom the gift of the older volume since she is more focused on gift ideas...again, like I said were great plus creative. She will love this book as she doesn't care too much about the products and tools, like I am.No matter what, you cannot go wrong with either one. Enjoy Polymer Clay! What a great world to escape to!

I don't really care for most of the projects in this book. But it's by Donna Kato and since she is a pioneer for polymer clay, it will remain in my library for reference.

I received a spiralizer from my youngest for Christmas. The cookbook that came with it was less than inspired. I knew it was basically for making vegetable noodles, but as I said, was less than inspired.There are some issues I found, as well as recipes I will definitely be making. First the concerns:It would have been nice if an explanation of what, exactly, are campari tomatoes are. I don’t have a clue. When reading a cookbook (yes, that’s what I do) I don’t want to look up what ingredients are. What if I can’t find them, once I figure out what they are? Is there a substitute? This recipe is Zucchini & Roasted Tomato Soup, so you can see, the type of tomato may be very important.I wonder if you can really cook a sweet potato for 6-8 minutes, even spiralized. Can you? This is in Sweet Potato Soup. I would really hate for it to be still raw. I guess having added, or until your liking, or something would be helpful. Really?In the Zucchini and Tofu Soup, knowing what kind of tofu to add would be helpful, especially for people like myself, who know nothing about tofu.One recipe is Sweet Potato with Calms. Of course, this is clams, and that’s what the recipe calls for.Finally, in the Sweet Potato and Apple Casserole, the recipe calls for “2 cups almond flour, blanched” What is this? How do you blanch the flour? Is this almonds made into flour after blanching? I am new to this type of cooking, so I truly don’t understand.Now for the recipes I REALLY want to try: Carrot Soup, Onion Soup, Zucchini with Tilapia (only maybe not with Tilapia, as it is very expense in this part of my world), Sweet Potato with Olives & Shrimp (yes, I’ll buy shrimp for this, even if they are $14.99 a pound, and yes, I gasped!), Sweet Potato Pancakes, Apple Pancakes, and Spiced Carrots. These are top priority.As a footnote, I looked up Campari tomato. “It is noted for its juiciness, high sugar level, low acidity, and lack of mealiness. Camparis are deep red and larger than a cherry tomato, but smaller and rounder than a plum tomato.” (Wikipedia) Just in case anyone wonders as I did.

Just got this book, and have not yet made any of the recipes, but looking forward to it. The only reason for the lack of the fifth star is1) total lack of pictures, so you have no idea what the finished dish should look like*2) specific references to a particular blade (usually 'blade c') with no definition of what that means. There is reference to the fact that there are many types and brands of spiralizer available, yet the only reference is to, apparently, the original Spiralizer. If you own a different brand you are forced to guess what 'blade c' does - IE: spaghetti, linguine, wide curls etc. In the absence of any pictures it would have been helpful if, in the opening section at least, there had been a brief description of what each of the available blades did, so the book owner would know what to use with their own brand.With those caveats I still can recommend the book as worth owning if only for the lovely collection of salad dressings. Perhaps down the road the author might consider making the additional blade info as an update.*I do understand that for the price it would be too much to expect pictures of every dish, but perhaps a few - maybe one per section, would be a nice addition as well.

I have purchased quite a few of author Emma Katie's recipe books over the past several years. I've always found them to be original, well-written, and full of varied and delicious choices.I pulled up her author page to see what she's released recently and was tickled to find a Spiralizer Recipe book. I have a spiralizer and don't use it for lack of inspiration. Problem solved.This cookbook has hundreds of recipes that are divided up between salads, soups and stews, entrees, vegetables, and even desserts. I've made several so far and can't wait to continue on these spiralizer adventures. Well done.

I got this book in kindle for 99 cents I love being on my tablet being able to click on a recipe link and the page comes up the recipes I hate going through page's in cook books any more I am so spoiled,some good recipes in this book I love cooking using my spiralizer makes it so much easier to eat healthy

This cookbook contained good recipes that our family enjoyed. It opened up a lot more spiralized recipes than the other cookbooks. It contained simpler ingredients that weren't as expensive as the other spiralized cookbooks.

the author does not describe the blades to use just with a b or c. new to this so it is difficult to figure this out..but I will. then I will be ok with this book

This is our first Spiralizer cookbook and we haven't tried the recipes yet, but we found that it's hard to find a particular recipe in it. There is a planning menu, but to find those recipes you have to search through the book. An index of any kind would make a big difference. It is divided in sections by the main ingredient (type of meat, etc), not the type of vegetable. The recipes appear to call for ingredients that are often already in the kitchen or at least not hard to find at the store.

This is amazing book. It cover info on Spiralizers and has lots of delicious recipes. Before I purchased this book, I looked at several others in Kindle, however, personally I find this is the best book for me because the recipes are easy to prepare and so many recipes to choose from.Highly recommended.

I was searching for a Christmas gift for my 13 year old niece whose mother mentioned she's been falling into the girl politics and following a "mean girl" for a while, to the point that teachers noticed a drastic (for the worse) change in her personality when she was around a specific girl. I kept finding a bunch of religion based books that, while helpful, were not giving the message and in depth explanations I wanted for her. This book is great for that questioning teen that likes to know the reasons behind everything, why she should do things, why she may feel certain ways sometimes, why people behave as they do. She opened it on Christmas and disappeared for a little over an hour, reading the whole thing in one sitting. Definitely a great book! I found the opening pages that described female behavior seen in primates to be enlightening and interesting as well!

This is the book I was always looking for in the 1990's when I was a teen. I am so glad to have it now, however for my daughters who will be teens in just a few years. Not only does the book give great insight into how we as females act toward each other and how we react to it, but it also has great advice on how to stop the vicious cycles we put ourselves into. The book is full of quotes and even website resources to help out with some of the more difficult issues at hand.I have to say also, not only teens can benefit from this book, but really any woman of any age can gain something from this book. I found not only great advice to help me in my own life, but also some great pointers that I could give to my 9 and 6 year old daughters, now!I recommend this book to anyone and everyone, I guaranty you will walk away from it with something that will help you in your day to day life no matter what your age or situation.

I am in my mid 40's and picked up on this book out of curiosity as to why I witness the same pattern amongst girls and women over and over again, years after I finished high school, or junior high school for that matter. Ms. Burton actually addresses the issue of why most girls and certain women have a tendency to be abusive towards their gender.This book is a very easy and quick read as it is also eloquently and simplistically informative. If more people read this book and comprehended the message, I believe that we would see some improving civility within, not only the female gender, but, for society as a whole.

Helpful for my daughter who was experiencing some nastiness from a girl in class. As with books of this nature, it does paint with a broad brush, but I really like the long perspective she takes. There are no good guys or bad guys, just good and bad ways of dealing with things. I'd recommend.

This book is just what I needed. I only wish it was around when I was a teenager. I'm a grown woman & it made me realise I wasn't alone in all that I've gone through. Hemingway's novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (1940) is toughly realistic in its depiction of the butchery of warfare. The book has the no-nonsense, fact-intensive style of a reporter. Yet, in its themes of love, death, heroism, and human brotherhood, Hemingway's novel is, in spite of itself, romantic in outlook, but romantic with an edge.The novel is set in Spain in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The Spanish Civil War was a multi-sided conflict between the democratically-elected government, the Republicans or loyalists, and its right-wing anti-communist opponents, the nationalists (fascists). The Republicans during this conflict had the assistance of the USSR. Their enemies, the nationalists, were assisted by Nazi Germany and by Italy. Hemingway was a correspondent in Spain at the time. His novel tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American instructor in Spanish at the University of Montana who had earlier spent much time wandering through Spain. In 1936, with the outset of the conflict, Jordan volunteered his services to assist the Republicans and became an expert in explosives. Jordan idealizes his grandfather who had been a hero in the American Civil War. Jordan's father had committed suicide. When the novel opens, Jordan is assigned to destroy a bridge in furtherance of a Republican offensive. He works with a group of guerrillas in the mountains.The story unfolds over a time of three days. Hemingway's book offers portrayals of a group of Jordan's Spanish compatriots, in addition to Jordan himself. Chief among them is a 48-year old woman, Pilar, physically unattractive, earthy, and strong-willed. She is the de facto leader of her group and is as central to the story as is Jordan. Pilar is the "woman" of Pablo, who was once a formidable fighter but who has become disillusioned by the conflict. The novel includes several scenes of high tension and near violence between Jordan and Pablo. In his efforts to blow-up the bridge, Jordan is assisted by Anselmo, an aged man who despairs of violence and killing but is devoted to the Republican cause. And, in the three days of the novel, Jordan meets and has a passionate love affair with Maria, a lovely 19-year old who has been saved from the nationalists by Pablo.Hemingway is known for a terse, elliptical writing style, and it is on display in this book. But the writing is highly varied, with long stream of conscious digressions by Jordan as he reflects upon his past life and upon the conflict in which he has thrust himself. Much of the writing is both figurative and digressive. Hemingway tried to transcribe much of Spanish idiom directly into English, particularly the use of "thou" for the intimate Spanish "you." He also makes considerable use of untranslated Spanish phrases. The book captures the speech patterns of soldiers under tension, with much use of colorful language. Hemingway does not reproduce this language directly but, in English, uses phrases such as "obscenity" or "unprintable" in place of the words themselves. In addition to telling the story of the bridge and its destruction, all the characters engage in long discussions of their thoughts and their prior lives. These discussions generally are directed to the brutality of the war. In an outstanding passage, Pilar tells of the destruction under the command of Pablo of a group of fascist leaders who are forced to run the gauntlet before being thrown down a cliff.Hemingway was in love with Spain, both for its beauty and its brutality. The novel has many discussions of bullfighting, largely told by Pilar as she recounts her experiences with earlier lovers. Pilar also has a power of clairvoyance in the story, especially as it relates to impending death. The book includes several vivid battle scenes. One of these scenes tells of the gunning-down by aircraft of a group of five of the guerillas assisting Jordan at the top of a small hill.(Aircraft has a large and fearsome presence in the book.) Another effective battle scene tells of the difficult destruction of the bridge and its aftermath.The love relationship between Robert Jordan and Maria comes to dominate the novel. The two become passionately attracted to each other and quickly consummate their relationship. The passages describing the couple's lovemaking are central to the story and effective. The inhumanity of war is juxtaposed against human commitment and the beauty of the everyday. Robert Jordan realizes that he is in love with Maria, Spain, and with life. This love, in the book, reaches its peak in heroism and self-sacrifice. Jordan comes to realize what in life he values. It is because of his realization, that he ultimately must give up the things he comes to cherish. Within its language of toughness and machismo, this novel has the theme of inevitability and of romantic tragedy.This is a book I read in high school many years ago when it was far beyond me. It is not an easy book, and not every part of it is successful. But it is an extraordinary novel. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to revisit the book when I was able to try to appreciate it.Robin Friedman

I am talking about kindle version. this book is full of typos. I told amazon to revise this book but it is still same.Do not buy this book, it is worthless. Prabhat prakashan and amazon are kidding us.

Just a quick note: I recently reread this when I was reminded of the complexities of the Spanish Civil War by a magazine article. The book did what I dimly remembered it did: it showed the local, human dimension of the war rather than the history book battle of ideologies we usually see. What I hadn’t remmbered was the subtlety and complexity of the love story. I’ve always thought Hemingway’s ability to present love has been underrated by many people who prefer to focus on the unwillingness of many of his characters to talk about their feelings. It’s true, his characters generally don’t have much to say on the subject, and even their inner monologues tend to be sparse, but Hemingway still manages to express his characters’ deep, vital and nuanced feelings. I think the lack of verbiage is part a reflection of the view expressed by many of his characters that it doesn’t do to talk about significant things too much and part the simple fact that the characters themselves don’t understand what they’re feeling.Hemingway was a fabulous writer, and much of his work, though clearly rooted in his time period, still stands up to scrutiny today.

The kindle edition I read was a "knock-off" Hemingway. The text was weird and not lined up. When there was an obvious expletive in the dialogue, it actually was deleted and the word "obscenity" was placed.

The Kindle version of “For Whom the Bell Tolls” is not very good. I don’t know if that is because it is an abridged version like other reviewers claim or whether it’s just not a good story. If the Kindle version is indeed abridged, I would have expected Amazon.com to alert buyers that it was so. Basically, “For Whom the Bell Tolls” is the story of a critical mission by a band of rebels accompanied by an American sympathizer fighting for the Republic against the Fascists in Spain during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The rebels’ mission was to blow up a bridge, but the interplay among the characters leading up to the attack dominate the story.

Having begun to "read into" Hemingway a bit, one begins to realise that everything about his style, including the lack of correct grammar, (as well as being the first writer to use the contracted form in literature, as everybody knows), has to do with conveying the feeling and the atmosphere of the places he is writing about, The more you read him, the more you read him, kind of thing. Hemingway's ability to create emotion and atmosphere that "takes you there", where the action is, is surprising, to say the least. Another: "can't put it down".book.A good read! For those who don't already know Hemingway.

Be careful what you purchase. This edition is abridged and disgraceful. Papa would not be proud.

I read in amazement, knowing of Hemingway 's fame I still felt surprise at his writing ability. When I read his Paris book he would return to his wife after a long day of writing by longhand. I now understand how difficult that must have been: to constantly be thinking of and feeling the tiny details while laboriously writing each word.This story of the Spanish civil war comes to the reader with such descriptive details that one can feel the dirt on their clothes and under the fingernails, and the cold dew of the morning. After all it is the details which causes a book to be readable and believable.

This book, for what it is, is invaluable. Having read it, I now know All the Facts About Africa (at least through 2011). Before, I knew that Charles Taylor was a bad guy, maybe having something to do with Liberia, and that Tutsis were massacred for some reason, but I was not able to piece together a narrative of how or why it happened. Now, I feel like I have a handle on what's going on in Africa and, importantly, can assimilate future news about the continent. This is like a textbook for an introductory course on African history (and if professors aren't using it, they should.) If I wanted to learn more about Senegalese history, or Ugandan history, it would be a great foundation.It's honestly churlish to complain about a 750-page book that covers 55 years of an entire continent -- but I will anyway. My main complaint relates to its textbookishness: Meredith offers scarcely any analysis. Why is Africa like that? Is there anything the rest of the world could have done to keep it from being such a disaster? (Would even more foreign aid have helped, or would it just have gone into somebody's pocket? Would more peacekeeping missions have worked or would they have just gotten sucked into the whirlwind of tribal politics?) What should the colonial powers have done pre-WW2? (Other than not colonize Africa duh) What should they have done post-war to prepare their colonies for independence? Was there a better way than the one they chose, or were Harold Macmillan and Charles deGaulle making the best of a bad situation?Most frustrating of all is Botswana. The history of Botswana is scarcely mentioned at all (that's not a problem in and of itself. There are a Lot of countries in Africa. The word Mauretania appears only three times in the whole book.) But occasionally Meredith will jump in to mention that almost every country in Africa had trouble with dictators, corruption, economic collapse and civil war, *except Botswana*. What did they do right? Did they have a singularly principled leader? Was it something to do with their ethnic makeup or the basis of their economy? Was it just sheer luck? Comparing Botswana with the rest of Africa would have been illuminating - but instead it's just a tease.Oh well. This is a very good book.

Martin Meredith's history of Africa since independence provides a critical service to the general reader -- telling clearly and comprehensively what has happened in Africa since 1960. In so doing, he covers an vast amount of material. There are at present over 50 African states, and they vary enormously, in terms of culture, resources, history, and on and on. Meredith discusses all of the major and most of the minor countries individually, moving forward through time in what is a triumph of organization. If I want in future to review the recent history of one or another African country -- or of some cross-border phenomena -- I shall know where to turn.It is probably too much to expect an explanation at the end of this chronicle. Mr. Meredith's history presents a harrowing account of war after war, dictator after dictator, famine after famine, and mass murder after mass murder. They differ from country to country, of course, but the pattern of kleptocracy combined with monomania emerges again and again. At the end, one has to wonder why, and Mr. Meredith does not really present many answers. It may not be possible to do so, but I wish he had tried.Upon finishing this book, I went back to Amazon to see if there is another on the same topic -- is Africa's history since independence really so totally hopeless? I didn't find anything of anything like Mr. Meredith's level of seriousness that presented a less pessimistic view, at least not based on writeups and reviews. For now, I remain stunned, and curious.

Mr. Meredith does a remarkably good job of covering more than 50 years of history for an entire continent in very a readable, if sobering, book. It’s not a work of political science. He’s not interested in assessing big-picture explanations for Africa’s problems, such class struggle, or neocolonialism, or economics, or ethnic divisions, or anything else. But he’s able to recount the actual stories of African independence. He doesn’t gloss over the diversity of experience in Africa, and details the different histories of different countries, while also covering the challenges that have faced whole regions or the whole continent. About a good a job as I could imagine anyone doing with this subject matter.

Martin Meredith's "The Fate of Africa" is an extensively researched 700 page tome that takes the reader throughout the African continent in the fifty years since independence from the Europeans who colonized them.There are many commonalities among the many countries covered throughout the book such as: hastily drawn and arbitrary European colonial borders, lack of preparation for post-colonial governance, a group of nationalistic leaders who morphed into autocratic leaders more concerned with power and enriching themselves and a narrow band of cronies at the expense of the state and the people.In this way, Africa shares a common fate.Readers should not be scared off by the sheer size of the book as Meredith has a writing style that flows easily. The pages just seem to fly by once one dares to dive in. Readers end up engrossed in narratives of the great hope of independence following colonization, and the disillusionment that often followed with: personality cults, weak economies, war, autocratic states with weak institutions etc. While rulers got rich, the average African was left to a most dismal fate: struggling to survive.Weighty, but worth the time, if one wants to begin to understand Africa.

Well researched, well written, and well worth reading. The author has done an outstanding job of completely bringing you up to date on the sorry state of most of the countries that make up Africa. And the picture he paints, while fair, is less than a pretty one.
