As an American girl, marrying an Iraqi man a bit older than myself, in the early 1960's, I saw many degrees of these attitudes and behaviors portrayed in this book. I have to say, despite the battles it took, we had 45 years of relative happiness and a great family. I also enjoyed the familiar Arabic words and things they ate. We all loved the delicious Arabic food my husband made. There are so many great qualities in these people. It's difficult to think that this was and is the way some of them still think!!!! Anyway, thank you, Etaf. P.S. They can be convinced otherwise.

I can't imagine living a life of such restriction and abuse. Being a woman in many parts of the world is a liability and a handicap. When did men decide this? When did it become shameful to be a woman? Women were celebrated and revered, idolized in some civilizations. Extremism in any society is dangerous. I give tremendous kudos for this author for shedding light on this belief that women are disposable beings. It's a terrible reality. A reality that should be fought against through education of both men and women in the Islamic/Muslim world. I find light in this author's courage to tell it. I find abundant courage in all women who tell this story.

I love reading about other cultures. This book made me feel the main characters. I had so much empathy for these women. I also thought the ending could not have been done any better. Perfect.

I learned a lot reading this book and the story is fascinating. Well written characters that come to life. It’s very sad and frustrating reading how this Arab culture has been so detrimental to its people. The only downside is that I found much at the narrative to be redundant. The same complaints and philosophizing overland over again.

It was a tough read. I understand the author was introducing us to a different culture but I did not like any of the characters. None. I just could not.

I absolutely loved this book. It brought so many tears to my eyes. Yes a bit repetitive in the dialogue of the characters. But I thought the author was so brave to speak about the injustices that Arabic women go through. As a woman you can't help but to just sympathize. I personally hated the ending but overall it's a raw, heartfelt beautiful story.

What a great read! I am Palestinian and felt Isra reminded me of some girls who are forced into marriage from overseas. A great book, can’t wait to read more from Etaf! 😘

This was a tough read from beginning to end.Be prepared to meet Isra and immediately be introduced to the depressive condition that is her life—written in its raw, unapologetic, and wholly frustrating form.I despised everyone.Everyone.Isra’s mother for her enabling of her daughter’s submissions, Fareeda for her role in keeping Isra in a state of stagnation, Khaled for resigning himself to a role he would come to champion for his useless sons ...just ...ugh!All of them made me want to break stuff.The fact that the book speaks to ideals based within the Arab culture didn’t change my perspective on these characters: I still despised many of them and kept waiting on them to be something more than enablers and abusers.I guess I’m too Westernized to read something like this because I simply couldn’t forgive Isra’s resignation.At all.Again, I understand the book is meant to show how restrictive life for a woman can be within the Arab culture, but a lot of what happens to Isra felt, at times, like willful ignorance/downright stupidity.She couldn’t get out of her own way. It was as if she decided the devil she knew was better than the one she didn’t—no matter the hell she was currently living.The writing itself was great. Rum understood where she wanted to go with the story and each one of her characters.In the end, my issue with this book was accepting a world where women are painfully irrelevant; to the point they’re driven to tragic extremes to find anything resembling true freedom.That was too big of a pill for me to swallow—no matter what truth it’s based in.

Finally, a truly powerful resource filled with knowledge and pictures.I could not put it down and read it through the first night. Now I keep it close at hand and review it any time that an unknown spider turns up.For years people would scream that almost any spider might be a brown recluse. We had no way of knowing. A DOCTOR stated that my sister MIGHT HAVE been bitten by a brown recluse. He looked right at the spider and said this.That turned out to be completely wrong and caused much unnecessary fear and apprehension. Not to mention the unnecessary medical cost.At the time, I could not find any reference with good photos or descriptions. I searched high and low.This book by Richard Vetter is the resource I wanted in my hand while they had my sister in the emergency room. It would have saved us all a lot of worry.KNOWLEDGE IS POWER and this this fascinating book is both easy to read, yet filled with the kind of information I would think any college professor would want the students to have on hand.Highly recommended for anyone who ever asked "is that a brown recluse?" or "where can I find a good picture of ...?"Long overdue. I wish that every Emergency Room doc in the country had one on hand.

I live with Brown Recluse spiders and am ALWAYS searching the internet to read up about them. I was bitten in 1980 by one, rushed to a hospital because I couldn’t breathe. ER Dr. told me I’d been bitten by either this spider or a Black Widow. To basically watch the area, don’t pop spot if it bubbled (it did, and burst open weeks later to show a 2” hole deep into my left thiegh) Ever since I’ve watched carefully for these spiders only last home was infested!!! And after a year of living in an apartment I brought furniture from old house I’d lived in. Only after 6 wks did I realize what I REALLY BROUGHT INTO MY HAPPY HOME- Brown Recluse spiders! By then it was too late- my humble apartment was infested. What a mess! Got rid of furniture that I brought but by then my place was crawling with these spiders. Have had my place “treated” 3 times professionally- still have them. Sticky traps work best, I’ve found. This book was spot on! Told about everything I never wanted to know about- but NEED to know about! Very, very informative, easy to read and understand! Highly recommend if you want to learn about these creatures!

After finding several brown recluse spiders in our home and sifting through misinformation on the internet, I felt fortunate to find this book. Well-researched, and accessible to the non-scientist, it lays out pertinent facts, dispels myths, and provides actionable insights to reduce the chance of a bite and at the very least make your home less accommodating to the brown recluse. Price seemed high until I got the book - dozens of high resolution color photos on thick paper stock likely means costly production--and the photos are vital to each discussion, especially when it comes to identifying (or misidentifying) the brown recluse. Money well spent.

I liked this book for a couple of reasons. Ms. Wagstaf talks about some of the artists who have inspired her and introduced me to artists I wasn't familiar with. I love her quiet, simple art made up of things important to her. Her work seemed beautiful and unique to me.

I was looking for theory and technique when I bought this book. There was basically no instruction. The author wrote a lot about famous still life paintings and the artists who did them. I was very disappointed with this book.

This is a must have for every beginning oil painter.

It had been many years since I owned an edition of Roberts and Hedges. Glad I bought it. If you had to choose one EM textbook this would be it. Now with the Expert Consult download you also have access online and to all the videos.

I got it as an e-book so I can use it in the field/while traveling. Looks great on an ipad mini with fantastic information.

The novel switches back and forth from Rosamunde’s younger days to the current day of 2014, telling the tale of tragedy and loss, of hope for the future and the gentle happiness of family. I thoroughly enjoyed Christmas at the Vicarage and have no hesitation in recommending it.

I don't usually love sappy holiday romance books, but this one is different! The author does a great job of creating a book with realistic characters, enjoyable story lines, and just enough holiday touches to make it seasonally enjoyable without weaving into the ridiculous. As it seems this is the first book by the author, I look forward to future books with great anticipation!

I started to read this book and it just didn't kick in for me so I put down for awhile. I picked it up again and kept going. It kicked in and was quite charming. The Vicar was quite different - almost free spirited and accepting of all events happening around him that it changed my focus from the protagonist, hence the four stars; that is just how I feel.

This is the second book I've read by this author. It's a great Christmas story with amazing characters and plot twists. I can't wait to read book 2 in this series of stories. I read book four first, so they can definitely be read as stand alone.books, but once you read one you'll want to read them all. Very much worth the price!

I stopped reading this book when the vicar chose a gay couple to play Mary and Joseph in the Christmas play, then joked about the decision.I do not in any way recommend this book.

I was drawn into the drama in the lives of all the characters in this story. Rosamunde's anguish with life felt very real. I kept reading to see if she would ever find happiness and to see how her family and friends fared. This was a good read!

I gave this book five stars because I thought it was perfect. I was never bored reading it, not once. The characters were brought to life wonderfully by the author. The story had many twists and turns, so that I never knew what would come next. I enjoy unpredictable stories. I plan to read more books by this wonderful author.

This turned out to be a delightful book, tho for me it was somewhat slow getting started( the reason for 4 stars, would've rated it 4&1/2). It checked off 2 of my favorites in a book. Set in England and taking place at Christmas. It's a feel good, warm, family story, including all the events occurring prior to Christmas in a small close knit village. And of course the requisite romance...or two. I recommend this book to one and all!
